View Full Version : Computer Turns On but Nothin'!
The computer I am writing about and having troubles with is the one in my sig. Anyways, when I boot the computer it turns on and all the fans, etc. work perfectly fine; however, the monitor does not have an input, the keyboard does not light up as normally, and my laserprinter does not auto-wake as it should. I've already basically taken the thing apart and checked everything from the RAM to the video card core to the PSU. Anyone have similar problems and ifso, what was the culprit?
Thanks for your help :)

sounds like a bad video card. do you have a spare or a friend that could loan you his video card to see if that works?

I had a similar problem in my past rig, everything would look like its on but the screen would get no input so obviously I thought it was the video card. It turns out one of the wires from the power supply was faulty and sometimes it'd work and others it wont. What I suggest you do is rebuild the entire rig on the floor and have the power supply wires as straight as possible, or even in the computer case if you can manage. If that doesnt work, try loaning a video card from a friend like jnev_89 said.
The fact that the monitor, laser printer and keyboard don't operate normally tells me that your computer is not booting at all. Your problem is probably associated with one of the following: psu, cpu, mobo, or ram. It is also possible that a peripheral is preventing boot. Are you getting any beeps? If so, tell us and we may have enough information to help you more.
Meanwhile, I recommend that you remove all cards except video, disconnect all drives except the C drive, and try to boot. If no boot or beeps, remove C drive and try again. If no boot or beeps, remove video and try again. If no boot or beeps, remove RAM and try again. If no boot or beeps, remove cpu and try again. If no boot or beeps at this point, either the mobo or psu are faulty.
At any step above, if you start getting boot or beeps, then you have removed culprit device. This is all a process of elimination.
Overall there are no beeps on boot and I have already dismantled the computer to no avail. Since I have just read your JimmyG, I will indefinetly try it out and report back in the form on an edit. Thanks for the help.
On a related note, roughly a week ago while I was playing WoW I experienced what I thought was indefinetly my power going down and then my PSU popping; however, after playing around with the computer for awhile it just started up normally, perhaps something was damaged then?
UPDATE:Ok, I've narrowed it down to the motherboard and since I can use this as an excuse to make a small form factor PC, I ordered a case, mobo, ane PSU a few days ago.
Did you smell anything when you heard the pop?? If you did, look for a bad psu or and exploaded cap on your mobo.
Any excuse for an upgrade is great! :D
