Shutdown probs

I have windows95 (dual booting with linux), but every time I choose shut down, the monitor stops working and its light blinks quite fast. I know from experience that this means it cannot cope with the resolution. I keep having to turn it off by the power button and doinf scandisk every time windows starts. I wouldn't use windows, but i need it to run Baldurs Gate II!

If you know it can't deal with the resolution then why not lower it? Or the refresh rate? Or get drivers for the monitor and see if that fixes it?

The monitor does 1024x768x16bit fine IN windows and in Linux. Its only when I shut down/restart/etc.
