View Full Version : How to recognize an NTFS partition from another computer...
I need to grab some data off an NTFS before reformatting, I don't know a whole lot about NTFS, so how do I get a 2nd computer running W2K to recognize it, so I can get the data? Thanks.
Conversion is pretty much a one-way street as far as MS is concerned. 2K will convert FAT to NTFS but not NTFS to FAT, however 3rd party is the way to go. PartionMagic will convert, and others as well. Also ntfs is not encrypted so you can read your saved ntfs data with any low level dos editor. You can go with Linux and recompile your kernal to read NTFS volumns. There are also 3rd party options to wrap and read ntfs partions from within windows but i think you want to convert and save?

its shount matter
if you transger the files to comptuer 2 via lan
or if you burn them on cd
or floppy
it shoudnt need to be converted to anyhting it should just work
the only probelm is if you have 98 running on a box and a spare hdd that ntfs
Are we talking partition or files?
turd: I believe were talking about both..
he wants to get files from his NTFS to another win2k box.
wow, for some reason I read too much into this, wishful thinking maybe (: I guess I was thinking he wanted to read an NTFS partion from within a FAT formated drive like slave up an old 2k NTFS drive to his new FAT 2k and dig in. The word "partion" threw me off. I think you would have to convert or use Linux to do that? Can that even be done with permissions and sam and all?. Getting more stars at this pace along with lots of learning. Great site
Yes, I just want to get some files off. I'm running Linux right now, and could recompile the kernel to read it, but I really, really, really don't feel like it.
Beware! PartitionMagic (even the newest one) doesn't like NTFS partitioning. It says it does, but I know from experience that it dosen't much care for it. Just so you know.
