I went into my local Bestbuy today and lo and behold they had super cheap DVDs. As in $3.99 per 50 pack for -R and I think 4.99 for +R. They are Verabtim 8x DVD-R. The UPC code is 0 23942 94984 8; reorder number 94984.
If you need DVDs I would suggest looking into this. They were on clearance, so I don't know if it is local or not, but IMO its worth a shot.
Happy Shopping,

fyi the verbatim dvd-r work in my newer dvd player and my old 1995 sony. i never tried dvd+r cause of compatibilty issues.
FYI Verbatim DVDs do not work right in a DVD Player. They refuse to play
Is this a known/documented problem? I know some formats will not play in some dvd players. But a whole brand name not playing?

This is a good deal. I'll cruise by my local BB tomorrow to see if they have it there.
Regarding the discs themselves, first of all the name brand Verbatim doesn't matter. It's the media code on the discs that does. The companies that sell the discs don't actually make them, they buy them from other companies. For example, if you buy Maxell DVD -R discs they could either be Taiyo Yuden or Ritek made. TY are better, but Ritek are still decent. Verbatim sources theirs from multiple companies as well. So use a program like DVD InfoPro to check the media code.
Secondly, it's complete BS to say that Verbatim discs are not DVD player comaptible. There are many other variables such as the DVD writer used, the software used to burn the disc, the write speed, etc. Crappy media will generally be less compatible, but burned properly they will still work with many stand alone players. This is not to say Verbatim media is bad, it's generally considered middle of the pack. Your top brands are Maxell, Fuji and Apple - but look for Made in Japan on the package (which indicates Taiyo Yuden or Ricoh made the discs).
very nice deal!
this one is even better than when i got 320 blanks for like $45

Verbatim Doesnt like my 16x Samsung Burner, I got a stack of 50DVD+R's and out of the stack I might have had 15 good burns, dunno why...
I spend a little more and get Memorex, I have never ever ever had a bad memorex burn, well at least not in the last 3-4 years.... :)

More than likely it's your spindle that is crap. I've found Verbatim DVD+R and CD/CDRW to be of the highest quality.
EDIT: could also be a firmware issue on the burner with that particular brand of media.

I recently got a spindle of Maxell (Ritek) that was nothing but coasters. My dvd burner couldn't finish a single one...But every other Ritek I've gotten is great.
I've had similar problems with every other brand that I've used for a long time. If all Verbatim's really couldn't play in dvd players, no one would buy them.

What's the GASP all about?
It's well known that every manufacturing process for storage media is subject to localized errors. My post was in response to the claim that Verbatim's are unplayable on dvd players.

The opinion you are expressing is a very uninformed one. I suggest you take the time to learn about DVD media. Two good websites are videohelp.com and digitalfaq.com One thread in particular you should check out is http://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=271418 which is an introduction to different media
Verbatim sells good discs. Period. If you burn them successfully and they won't play in stand alone players it's one of:
A. The software you're using has an issue. In your case Nero is known to work well so that's probably not it.
B. The write strategy in the firmware for your burner sucks with these discs. This is probably the culprit. Upgrading your firmware may or may not fix the problem.
C. The burner just plain doesn't work well with this media. However, if this were the case you would be getting unfinished / errored burns, not completed burns that don't work in stand alone players.
D. You got a spindle from a bad batch of discs. But again, this would have symptoms like the above, not like what you're describing.
You can say I flamed you if you want, but the fact is you posted a BS statement that Verbatim don't work with regular DVD players and I simply called you out on it. Who's the noob that doesn't know what they're talking about?

I went to BB on my lunch today, and they were sold out. The word leaked this morning and employees bought them all up.

They work fine for my burner and 5 dvd players I tried them in. I may go check during my lunch break in a bit.

Is this a MIR?
I use Ritek from an online vendor. Still @ $0.36/ disk for 8x DVD-Rs, but NEVER a bad one from them. I have had 2x50 stacks of prodisc fine, then 35+ out of my next stack turned out to be crap.
BB......CB....Crap buy....lol

Agreed, I haven't had a single problem with verbatim yet. 300+ disks n counting 0 coasters.

Sorry to those that don't have the chance to get them, they are a good deal. Also, they burned and worked in my DVD player, so that's a good thing.
No, it isn't a MIR, its in store marked off. Hope this helps!
