Where was this when I bought my XP Home :bang head

I'm not sure how legit that is because I was always under the assumption you had to buy a component or system with an OEM licensed copy...

Pinky,

Typically to get around that rule, a small inexpensive piece of hardware is included with the purchase. For me it's usually been a cheap ps/2 mouse. Take care.

aye, I bought an OEM HP copy of XP pro which is just a branded disc, the data is exactly the same unlike dells OEM. It came with an IDE cable.

lordkosc, that helps this discussion how exactly? You going to pass those saving on to the classifieds after you get 100 posts or were just bragging?

Anyone know when Vista will be launched? Wondering if I should buy WinXP Pro. I have WindowsXP Pro Student/teachers edition. I want to slip stream my SATA drivers into it, but with this edition, it ends up too large to fit on a CD-ROM. So alas, I must downgrade to get the luxury I want.

Windows Vista is scheduled for release by late 2006.

Cheaters! :p

Thanks for the info.

Oops, I just realized this post didn't contribute to the good of the thread... sorry JT!

OOops, I just realized I'm wasting even more time now with my explanation about how much my post wasn't benefiting this thread. My deepest apologies to all! (especially JT)

Okay, now I really need to stop typing but I'm feeling so guilty I just feel I have to say something about how damn aweful it is I'm wasting pixelated space with this rubbish. Spank me, pleez!

BTW, JT, yeah he was being a braggard for mentioning his inside M$ contacts... so let him. Be the bigger man! [like I was making sarcastic comments about your sarcastic reply...]

Microsoft Gold Partner ftw. 100 liecenses of every OS and application software for me ;)

and to contrbute. jsut remember to purchase some hardware with it and tecnically speaking the software must follow the hardware ;) And academic version you of course must qualify for or its is not considered legit :) Though they would make good gifts to friends in college r going to school that need an upgrade!

How bad is it to use non-legit keys? One of my friends said that when he did windows update a few times it eventually said that his key was not validated or something. What's so bad about that? I'm curious... if it's that bad maybe I'll have him buy this, but I'm just curious what could happen...

Whatever. My great uncle's aunt's cousin's best friend is Bill Gates, and he programmed a special easter egg into IE where if you type my name backwards and put three tildes at the end of it, a flash popup of me doing the Macerana will appear and give me a new license key every time. Coincidentally, that's also apparently the root of many of IE's security flaws - who knew, eh? :D

Back to the discussion of the actual DEAL, I ordered a copy for Dad's computer at home, so we'll see how it goes. The site says it's a Dell-branded disk.

I have seen the same problem with the xp pro bootleg or (corporate that slipped out) I dont think ms will do anything but I bought the xp home version from edirect for $60 to run until I can make a good decision between pro64 and vista 64. I tried the trial pro 64 and it was great , but i want to compare it to vista before i buy.

Just got my XP Home in yesterday . OS works fine although it took 7 days instead of 3-6 . I can't complain though considering the free shipping via US postal service and the fact it was only $59.99 .

The University of Michigan's computer shop sells it for 10 dollars if you work at UofM or go to the school.

i think that the bad part is its not legit ... but enough googling will almost always bring a solution to MS pebble in the road...

Might have my little bro check out UT's store, since he just moved in this weekend.

BTW, we ordered a copy from this eDirectSoftware site. It's a Dell Reinstallation Disk (like the one you can pay $10 to get when buying a Dell computer to reinstall your copy of Windows). Comes with a CD key on the back, but very explicitly states the disk is only to be used on a Dell computer, yada yada.

Key was all I cared about, but the whole thing seemed kinda shady to me.

Got mine within the specified estimated delivery date (6 days). Just doesn't look "legal" to me, technically. But oh well ... bought it, gonna install it now.

Agreed. But between the place being too good to be true and those reviews, I'm awfully wary. -- Paul

How'd it go?

PerlAddict

Haven't tried installing it yet. I'll try it with the disk it came with. I already have a copy of WinXP, so really it was just the license I needed, but I figured I might as well try it while reformating isn't a hassle still.

Paying for an OS is so 1990. Fortunately for me, I can just download mine for free, I have no activation crap to deal with, and it's totally legal too.

Linux must likely or is in MS Delevoper Group

MRD

I would sooner eat my own internal organs than be in a MS developer group.

Gentoo Linux is what I use mostly (I also have some Debian, Xandros, and FreeBSD).

I refuse to deal with all that activation crap. I'm a hardware junkie, and I'm constantly moving hardware around, reinstalling, tinkering, and otherwise fixing stuff that isn't broken. =p Activation makes me justify myself every time I tinker, so I just started using Linux. Then palladium was announced, and I vowed never to purchase Micro$oft products again.

Just in case anyone is shopping I just noticed tonight that the price on XP Pro cd only dropped to $80 .
Anyone know if you buy this version if you can trade up to Pro64 through MS for free with this version , cause that would really be sweet if you wanted 64Pro and your not in a big hurry ?

ericcase

I bought the XP Home version and it works fine. The windows update validated my key and all the updates work. I am not a software xpert but the only difference that I can find is on the start menu the (Dell Solution Center) near the bottom right ,here's what you find when you choose it
