Well, as the title suggests, I'm new to working with overclocking almost any hardware component (though I have dabbled in graphics overclocking using software). My first stop is probably going to be with RAM, since what I have right now is my weak point (other than my graphics card, which has a hard time staying stable at any decent software OC).

I understand that most of the overclocking people do has to deal with BIOS, but I havn't ever seen any settings in my default bios that would give me any reasonable control over voltages, frequencies, clock timings, etc. so I assume also that I'll need to flash my bios to a different version and whatnot.

Well, I think I'm on the right track, but correct me if I'm wrong, I'm all ears to anything anyone has to say :D

If your motherboard has tweakin options, they will be there most likely in the shipping (default) BIOS as well. I would suggest first going to your manual for information on your BIOS options. If you don't have the manual, go to the MSI site and attempt to download it or google for your mobo to see what comes up.

I see the board in your sig, however, I am not familiar with the S754/VIA based mobos from MSI. Does it have a "street name" similar to my MSI K8N Neo2 Plat?

Don't mean to double post, and I'm not sure on the policy of it here at OCF. Nonetheless, I updated my bios and there are a vew options, including a PCI to AGP frequency and voltage change and whatnot..but I'm still not quite sure how these work, nor do I have any experience with playing with these settings.

The problem is that I still do not see any settings for my RAM speeds or voltages, despite this update.

That link will get you to a page where your mobo is one of the choices. Select it and it will take you to a page where you can then download the English version of your manual (I followed your link to the "Download" section, then found "Main Boards" on the left and under that heading was the choice of "Manual", which then took me to this page).

Look through the manual, seeking the keywords "advanced chipset options" or similar. Hopefully you will be able to find a section for the type of adjustments that you are seeking. Post when you find the answer.

Just for grins I'll download the manual as well.

i'm attempting to configure MBM right now, but I can't find my motherboard on the listings under MSI... Any advice for this problem?

EDIT:

Set MBM to use the motherboard settings for a K8T Neo, despite the fact that mine is a K8MM ILSR

There doesn't seem to be a huge difference, and these are the readings I'm getting (you guys can help me judge whether they are off or not).

Core: 34 C
Sensor 3: 0 C
Core 0: 1.47v
Core 1: .06v
+3.3: 3.23v
+5.0: 5.0v
+12.00: 12.22v
-12.00: -12.11v
-5.0: -5.19v
Fan 1: 3515RPM
CPU: 1801mhz

I assume the sensor 3 that's reporting (and my case temp which is listed as -127) aren't particularly matching with my K8MM ILSR. Otherwise though, do these numbers sound good?

First thing you want to do is set your Dram clock to 333. With your ram at it's stock speeds your cpu won't overclock very high. Then you want to find the core clock or HTT clock and raise it little by little booting into windows. You might want to start of with 1.52v-1.55v on the vcore. That should be a quick way to overclock in a nutshell.

Super Nade,
Thank you for the links. The poster did not respond to you, so I am on his behalf thanking you.
This reminds me of those who skip the basics (even when say need to learn) and jump without the training. then half way to ground they wouldn’t know how to release the parachute, because they thought skipping the class saves them time.

I did not mean to seem ungrateful, or to have it seem like I did not read over your works. I did take the time out to look at the general overclocking post in full as well as the stability, info on AMD64 Bit CPUs, and some of the programs as well.

I'm still having a bit of trouble with my overclocking though, I searched through my bios and found core operating speeds and was just starting to try it out, but when I upped the speed only by 5 mhz, when I booted into windows, I got the pretty blue windows error screen common in XP (especially when theres corrupt files).

SD,

That is a nice collection of links...hope you don't mind that I've bookmarked them for future reference.

Cryp71c,

Did you D/L the manual for your mobo? I've got it, but got busy and didn't have a chance to look at it, but will try to shortly to see where your BIOS options are hiding.

I did d/l it and took a look, but I've got to go back and reference my bios to see if there are the same options as described in the manual. I have looked a couple of times, but didn't see those options, especially for the CAS Latency timing changes, core clock, or htt clock.

I hope you even have them. Some mobos are not overclocker friendly and on purpose, these things are excluded.

Under what circumstances did you buy this rig? Did you buy it already built or did you DIY? If so, what led you to that mobo?

I purchased the board on a budget, and because I had heard good things about MSI, though at the time I wasn't looking at overclocking anything. It was also a great deal for a 64bit mobo, I think it was around 60 or 70 dolars and had everything I needed. I have tried to flash the bios up to date from windows, but it keeps saying it needs an update, so I'm going to try it via floppy when I get a drive (right now I don't have one..lol)
