View Full Version : Another P4 650 overclocking question

Well, I've had the rig in sig a little over 4 months running stock most of the time since I'm still using stock cooling. I've gotten 4.02ghz windows and general bench stable but not prime...it always fails the first time around at test 2. Tonite I tried something different.
I set the fsb to 250 and set the "Intel Speedstep Technology" setting to Minimum. Upon resetting, POST displayed 4.25ghz but once I log into windows it stays @ 14x (3.5ghz) no matter what I do which is cool i think. I checked the hardware monitor in bios and it displayed the usual 50-52c. My rig currently passed one set of tests dual-priming @ 60c and 1.264vcore. However, I'm wondering the initial POST a 4.25ghz would be potentially hazardous to my cpu. Any thoughts on this?

It's prolly not harmful to your cpu. If it were being stressed too much, it prolly wouldn't post at all. It might also indicate that your cpu might easily do 4.2+ if you had good cooling. Looks like you might have a good proc there.

Thanks for the reply Bigstan. I've been dual-priming the second stress test (cant remember what it is off hand) for a little over an hour now. I have another question tho...
I ran a sandra memory bench and i got 6250 int buff'd and 6238 float buff which is my best yet :) but down in the additional info, it says fsb is 304mhz and my memory is running 808mhz whereas CPU-z recognizes what I set as 250fsb/333memory. Is this a Sandra 05 bug? I just installed a new patch today.
Edit: In addition...sandra, Aquamark3,3dmark05, 3dmark03, 3dmark01 and Windows all report my cpu as being @ 4.25ghz...but cpu-z still says 3.5ghz. I guess there is a "disconnect" in there somewhere...I'm gonna set it to stock until someone can give me some explaination...this is kinda scaring me :) ...EVERYTHING but CPU-Z says I'm running 4.25ghz. I tried to attach a screenshot but it keeps sayin my photo is too big.

It's most likely bugs in those proggies. You are getting at the 14 multi thru the backdoor. It prolly will take the authors a while to catch up. Using the SpeedStep setting to get to 14 seems to be a new phenomena.
To resize your pics, you can use this freeware program. http://www.irfanview.com/ ~ you outline the part of the pic you want to use then select Edit>Crop. There is also a "Resize" choice to make it even smaller.

Ok...I've been playing around some more and think I have throttling 2.0 or something. The first pic is b4 running dual prime, second is during (notice how my cpu speed clocks down dramatically ia AI Booster yet my CPU temp never goes above 60c AND CPU-Z continues to read a constant 3.5ghz :eh?: ), and the last is a minute or so afterwards. I suspected something was happening since running @ 3.5ghz and 250fsb did nothing to increase my 3dMark01 score but strangely Aquamark3 scored pretty much predicatably. I d/l'd that program BigStan but the resize makes the images basically unviewable since my native screen reso is 16x12 i guess. I attached them anyways along with my cpu-z validation number 30750. Bear with me, I'm new to this posting pics stuff.
This type of throttling is strange yes?

I've encountered this with my 650\EIST. I first noticed it running memtest. My theory is that the cpu is actually powering on at 17x, and then a milisecond or whatever later EIST is knocking it down to 14x. This would explain why when running the 17x I can get to 4.0ghz on AUTO Vcore, but when using EIST to run 14x I need 1.45vcore to get even 3.8, since the chip is actually powering on at 17x, it requires much more vcore, because 17x * 272= rouhgly 4.6ghz
Why not leave EIST on? I do with my 650:

Why not leave EIST on? I do with my 650:
1) Because I'm on stock cooling still and running 4ghz runs my CPU @ 68-70c under full load and 2) I can't get prime stable @ 4ghz...general benching stable yeah but I like the added comfort of knowing prime95 doesn't crash.
Running with EIST at 'MINIMUM' was just a test to see if I could run my rig @ 14x multi and it would. But I found some rather strange throttle-like issues that I have yet to resolve/understand. I wish those pics were a little clearer so peeps could see what i'm talkin about :(
Edit: Imageshack is pretty cool :)
Here is during dual prime:

Here is after dual prime:

See what I mean?
Because the Asus utility reports 4.25ghz and CPUZ reports 3.5?

What I'm refering to in the pics is even though I'm supposed to be running 3.5ghz actual, the AI Booster reports 4.25ghz. I've chalked that up to the coding in AI Booster however. In the pic while running dual prime's you can see the "bogus" 4.25ghz in AI Booster drop to 3.1ghz but CPU-Z maintains 3.5ghz...
That's what I think is really fishy. I was kinda hoping someone could try and reproduce this on there setup and see what happens. Asus 915 and higher chipsets of course...
I'll give throttlewatch a try also.
