So I lost my Mini-HTPC... I'll get it back! Ha Ha!! (I doubt it...)
I decided I would just make something a little different now, out
of the ordinary, and hopefully it will not really look like a PC when
I am done.. Then maybe my wife will let me have it
back...Hmmmm........ :santa:
I already have the case design in my head working out details. It will involve
using a couple of these:
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/ceiling_light.gif
some of my Favorite Modding Mesh, and a lot of imagination..
I did find the Lights at Lowes. $70 each for those is too much
Moola. Since I can be such a cheap B-----d, so I found some
very much lookie alikes for around $7.50 each.
Edit: Spent the afternoon today (08/07/05) Hunting down most of what I will
need to complete the mod. All that is left now is DVD rom and aluminum
angle.
Edit again: A list of each phase of this project will be left here and edited as
it is developed.
( ) First thing is to begin modding the PSU - Almost finished
--Left to do: black wire sleeve PSU wires, paint most of PSU Flat black, LEDs!!
(X) Build inner Motherboard Support Framework - Finished but getting further modification.
(X) construct outer "shell" or case - Started
(X) Design Watercooling system to fit and be completely hidden. This will be tough... Started
( ) find a wireless Keyboard and Mouse to match, Otherwise a wireless set will be modded...
( ) Painting and Reassembly
(X) Design and assemble Led Lighting effects for both domes and lower case strip... Started

i have that same lamp in my bedroom and i don't know if its going to work (not to discourage you) but when i clean it out you have to FORCE the glass piece while screwing in the bottom portion, and by the time i finaly get the screw to grip i can turn it about a half a turn... so if you have a mesh in between iono if it'll work, but good luck anyway!

No problems. one of the light units will be used for the PSU, redesigned of course! The other I have not decided.
THE BOOB LAMP!!
cool, subscribed
NO! it is not a Boob lamp! Sheese! LOL
I am envisioning something that will look more like a HG Wells Horror film prop, but better looking. If only my Paint or photochop skillz were somewhat more useful, then I would slip a little teaser of what it will be looking like. One unit at the top one at the bottom, a little of the mesh in between. I'm still contemplating watercooling the thing. That would drastically change the overall interior design of the case, but to no great extent.
Edit: Forgot to mention that there will be lots of LED action going on under those domes...

Well, I spent the afternoon checking how things will fit. So far, So good...
The Light units before modding:
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe07.jpg
After the Fiberglass Insulation, light sockets and hardware was removed, The CD/DVD will be fit nicely at the very bottom of the case. the Drawer will be Stealthed complete with the LEDs and buttons relocated. With this placement, the CD drawer opens just above the tray lines
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe09.jpg
On the other side of the 'tray' the modified PSU will be mounted. there will be holes cut to accomodate the passage of wires into the actual case as well as provide ventilation. This pic will give the general idea...
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe04.jpg
The PSU being Checked for fit under the glass, everything was just stuffed:
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe02.jpg
and it all fits!!
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe03.jpg
So now, The First Phase of this Project should be for me to get the PSU Built and light 'er up!

Its almost time for me to go to work, (my job) So I decided to work on the custom PSU for a few minutes.
The old PSU that I was planning to use, I quickly discovered has been burning itself up.
the 5V and 12V rails were quite melted and blackened on the circuit board. Also looks
as if one or two of the Caps had leaked some kind of fluid all over the board causing
some of the parts to short and heat up. So I cut off all the stuff I could salvage and
tossed that one away. Fortunately I always buy anything computer related while it is on
sale, and just happened to have a new 480 watt PSU (Its Generic...)
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe20.jpg
I quickly stripped it from its case and prepared the light fixture to have this circuit board mounted inside.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe17.jpg
First step, of course, was to remove the center mounting shaft/pole/stick ..whatever.. not
sure just what it is called, and check the placement of the PSU circuit board.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe15.jpg
then I had to mark the Ventilation holes. I knew I would not be using the normal 80mm fan
that normally accompanies these power supplies. But, I would use instead, a fan I pilfered
from one of my extra Hard Drive coolers. These little gems can put out as much air as a
80mm fan and are much quieter.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe14.jpg
Sparks just for those that like some action...
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe13.jpg
The cutting and drilling is completed..

The PSU circuit board will be mounted like this using brass standoffs pilfered from an
old computer case I was not using anyway.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe11.jpg
Now the PSU is nearly completed, I will have to fabricate a mounting bracket for the glass dome. Once mounted and a few little details worked out, like adding strain reliefs for the wiring, and rerouting all the AC power lines to another location in the case.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe10.jpg
also to be added will be a little EL wire and some LEDs to light it up somewhat.

Yeah, that cover does look like the "funnel" part of an old, round CRT. On second thought, it looks more like a plunger used to unclog drains.
But anyways, it's amazing how all sorts of unusual objects can be modded into a PC... With the LEDs, it will double as a nice nightlight.

Just to add another design teaser..
A couple of shots of the nearly completed lower case section, this is where the watercooling equipment will be housed. Well, except for the radiator. All the gray tube section and white trim on this section will be painted red.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe24.jpg
After being painted red, the body of the pc will be wrapped in the modding mesh I like so much. Just try to imagine the gray as red, this is going to look cool.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe23.jpg
Now a final teaser, A little of how it should look from the top when nearly assembled. The whole PC will be sitting on the mesh and the other light dome will be encased in the mesh at the bottom. No pics of that yet. Still working on the frame for the motherboard and Hard drives. all painted metal surfaces of the case, with the exception of the mesh, will be painted with the hammered paint finish in either a black or very dark carbon gray metallic finish.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe22.jpg
This is just a small teaser, but the lower and upper sections will be separated by an empty space in between the shell sections. The gap will be lighted, but the whole tube will seem empty, the ole tricks of light thing...

Time for another...UPDATE!!
finished the basic motherboard frame. This little jewel is made with 1/2" aluminum angle, 8 inches X 22 inches eventually it will have a sheet of acrylic covering it for most of its length, and the acrylic sheet will be held in place by thumb screws. That should be able make it easier to remove the motherboard if I need to make some changes.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe29.jpg
The next thing was to get the frame attached to each base unit. This was done by drilling and using pop rivets to hold the whole assembly in place.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe28.jpg
another angle of the same thing:
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe27.jpg
In this crappy picture, you get the idea of the beginning placement of the inner shell of this case.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe26.jpg
the 5" gap will be filled in with a length of acrylic plastic in either white or clear cracked ice pattern. This should be able to be show light from the interior, but not actually show anything. Its a "just for kicks thing", gives some extra bling.
This last photo give the basic idea of how it should look after being wrapped in the mesh. However- after seeing it in the picture, I think I will have to change the color on the inner shell a little. Too much red is showing through. Probably will have to change this to a darker red or red/orange color or even paint something in that makes it look burned.

added the acrylic motherboard tray. This first pic is after the acrylic was

here it is possible to see the Brass Motherboard mounts that have been added as well:
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe31.jpg
The last picture here is showing the case upsidedown. the metal fixture
has been painted black just to get a feel for what it will soon look like. And I
like it, but soon will get a good sanding, primer and the Hammered finish I
mentioned in a previous post. I suppose the next task would be to cut the
mesh to fit. and probably should be followed by the watercooling stuff.
( :santa: ) but then I have to work out the stealth part of the CD/DVD
Trays, I don't want them showing on this case unless open. Too bad I cant
get my hands on a couple of slot loading drives
Just remeasured the whole thing, seems I goofed. Oh well, it better that way
anyhow. Origionally I wanted it only about 20 inches tall, but now it seems it
will be nearly 32 inches.
Just my guess here but I may have to paint the inside black as well.

Hey! More sparks for those who like action. Here is a more or less Ghetto
style Precision cut on the Mesh I will be using. Since this mesh is also painted
already, it smokes pretty bad as well.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe38.jpg
After wrapping the mesh around the tube, you can see just how exact the
measurements were that I had made. I still think the camera makes it look
as if there is too much red under there, But I think I have a little trick in the
works. Have to Love that high-tech ghetto tooling, That black strap is just
an ordinary leather belt holding the mesh in place until it has been
fastened in place.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe37.jpg
A couple more pop rivets will probably be enough to finish this. The seam will
eventually be covered by the addition of some supporting hardware. .

Have not had much time to work on this until just now. So a smallish Update is in order.
Around the exterior of the light fixture I am using, I have added some brass standoffs. These standoffs are intended to keep the tube away from the fixture, creating a small air gap. The 1/4" gap is where air from inside the case will be allowed to excape, at the back of the case (wherever that is) I will be mounting 4-5 of the 60mm fans that will be pilfered from a couple of the MANY hard drive coolers I have in storage. This crappy, blurry, (*expletive deleted*) picture shows how the standoffs are holding the shell of the case on.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe40.jpg
This last image shows the nearly completed, and very basic case. As I said in one of my previous posts here, that empty gap will be filled in with a crackled acrylic window. Light will be allowed to show through the window but nothing inside will be seen. I am even thinking of working out a way to have the light change color when the CD drawers are opened.
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe39.jpg
Forgot to mention that the light at both ends of the case as well as the middle space will be "moving", hopfully giving the appearance of a huge amount of energy transfering from one end of the case to the other.
Now to begin cutting the Copper tubing the way I want. The Radiator for this is going to be a really fun project now. It is finally starting to look like I want.

A quick addition to the previous post. Just to give a quick shot of where I am starting with the copper tube... These will make an interesting radiator, but these are only the start..
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe41.jpg
given the design as the way I see it, these along with certain 'embellishments' will work almost as well as any monster radiator.
Lookin' real good. I'm anticipating the finished product. :)

Not much for an update. Been working on the Custom Radiator (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=409186) to fit this thing.
however, I got tired of the heavy glare of red showing under the mesh and changed
it a little:
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe42.jpg
A little quick touchup with some black overspray and it looks much better. Soon
enough it will get a coating at the top and bottom of the Hammered Finish paint.
It should be looking real good by then :)
Next step after the radiator is finished and pretty much mounted, is to get the extremely custom pulse lighting built and installed :D this is going to be the kicker! you are all going to love that!...

are those copper thingies fencepost caps or something to that effect?
you can keep them shiny and smudge-free for longer - once theyre cleaned and polished, just hit them with some of the high-end turtlewax - the stuff with lots of carnauba, im not a fan of the basic edition - i prefer the paste.... i think it seals the air and dust and oil out, but maybe thats just my own delusion. i use it around the copper and brass on the boiler in the basement.
once a year, i just hit it with brasso, then finish with the wax - it looks rather nautical - shipshape if you will- and it stays that way for at least a year.
that is unless you wanna use a clear hard urethane/laquer or something....

Along with everything else I had going on today, I found some time to
begin cutting the access panels to the case. The first cuts are for the
access to the hard drives that will be mounted inside.
The case marked and ready to cut:

The masking tape provides a shield against the sparks. The mesh was cut away first,
Then I took a hack saw blade and was able to cut the cardboard shell away as well.
If I had tried to cut both at the same time, the cutting wheels from the dremel
would have shattered very badly. Seems to be caused by thermal stress on the
wheels. Even the reinforced wheels will do this.
This pic is of the case after I finished cutting the Hard drive access away:
http://members.cox.net/lwcma2/Mars/Probe49.jpg
after I have finished cutting each panel, the mesh will be riveted to the cardboard
and then a smallish amount of trim will be applied to hide the rivets (no pics
yet) :)
...the mesh will be riveted to the cardboard...Now that is ghetto.
Lovin the good work. Keep it up.

Finally Finished cutting out all the access panels. Took about 30 discs to do
it, but it is finally done.

I had decided to try cutting the cardboard tube with the Dremel abrasive wheels
again. I thought that the first time I did this it was just an accident that they broke
so badly in cardboard. After all it was just cardboard!
To my dismay, Cardboard rules Dremel tools:

These 15K RPM throwing stars bite like a SOB!! interesting thermal fracturing
going on here. The second longest one I had to dig out of my arm!
Warning Kiddies, do not try this at home! (or anywhere else for that matter)

Wow, I cannot believe this mod It seems like it's going good and it's pretty ghetto. Keep up with the good work!
p.s. I have 2 of those lights in my house LOL, 1 in the hall, 1 at the bottom of the stairway to basement HAHAHA.

This effect was accomplished by copying a similar product that could be purchased here (http://www.crazypc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=82530)
What I did was considerably more powerful, and is able to move the light, which will give it that shifting/moving effect.
believe it or not the video was shot in a well lighted room. That should give you all a reference on how bright the LEDs I used are.
When I am done with the mod, I will show how I was able to do this.
Edit: That Link is where I kind of got the idea to do that anyway...

Killer project. I love the lights, and the idea of a tube computer rocks. You can roll it to LAN parties!
Looking forward to more!

Ill get there. Some of my mods will run somewhat slow. depends on everything going on. The holidays really messed up my schedule for completing projects. First is first, I am currently trying to finish the Big Box then with the leftovers and extra time, this one will be completed too. :)

@Frank and everyone else that wants this finished...
SO WOULD I!!, It would be the perfect home for my new P4 mobo. The problem is that I will be finishing the Big Box project first, still have a couple of months on that. Then this one will be jumped on and done in short order!

That's some impressive work you have there. I was looking over your pics, and you definately deserve kudos for creativity, man! My mod won't be anywhere near this intensive (basically the average cut-holes-in-the-case mod).
I look forward to the final product.
