Smitty66,

Welcome to the Forums!! Hope you like the place, and stick around and become part of the team!! :)

I just got an XP 1800+ myself. Right now, I've got a Millennium Glaciator on it. This is my first AMD chip too... I'm curious on the answers you'll get, and will be following this thread closely myself..lol

The Glaciator is lapped, and I used Arctic Silver thermal compound. I'm getting idle temps around 40c....that seems awfully high to me. I'm running on a MSI K7T266 Pro mobo....I'm wondering if the mobo's monitoring capabilities are accurate. SiSoft Sandra, and the BIOS both show lower temps.

I'm leery of overclocking this thing too far, until I know exactly where I stand, temp wise. I have it at 145FSB/1668MHz right now, at default vcore. I bumped the vcore up for a few minutes to 1.85, and 1725 seemed stable, though I didn't really push it all that hard.

Hey!!..Thanks Mr.B

I just ordered in 512M of Crucial Ram.....and plan on using an Epox 8KHA+ KT266A MB with the 1800 ... I also hope my Big Ol' Voodoo5 will fit the setup since I mostly use it for Flight Sims and FPS like OFP...

My main concern right now is a good cpu cooling setup ...I would like to start bumping but .I'll give it a little time and see what the pro's in this forum can achieve.....

I'm in *The Fly On The Wall Mode*:D

I think that the alpha's and vantec fans do a prettty good job cooling.
But if u want to do some serious O/C ull need a water coolong setup.
Plain copper doesnt cut it with these high temps on AMds...

BTW
Ur voodoo5 will do fine as long as u got plenty of ram and a proc over a GHz!

Alpha..

I do have an Alpha P3125 on my sons OC'd P3800@960.....nice setup...The Alpha PAL 8045 seems to have a little HS issue I just read in the cooling section

seems to be an easy fix...

as for liquid type cooling .....it's interesting...maybe once I have a little more experience in OCing...I'll give it a go

Welcome to the Forum!
My top 4 list:
Alpha PAL8045 with 68cfm 80mm Delta
Swiftech 462
Thermalright SK6
Millenium Glaciator
The Glaciator is very heavy and it is recommended that when transporting the computer the heatsink be removed...It's relatively quiet...

The SK6 does great in combination with a high speed 60mm Delta fan, but the noise is too much for some people ( I include myself here..)

The Alpha PAL 8045 and Swiftech 462 are pretty much on par with each other, with some reviews giving a slight edge to the Alpha: both are very LARGE and you need to be certain that your motherboard can accommodate them.

I agree with Chaos, the 4 Heat Sinks he mentioned are the cream of the crop, each with their own unique quirks. Check out the reviews of each HSF on this site.

Keep in mind that the 80m 68cfmdelta is pretty loud too...although not as annoying as the 60mm delta.

I talked to the guy who I get my parts from last night.....I'm interested in the Alpha Cooler.......he 's tryiing to sell me on a golden orb or Volcano cooler......he figures copper is copper a heatsink is a heatsink and instead of paying big$$ for the alpha...why not buy the cheaper and put on a beter fan......

Myself...I'drather pay for the Alpha instead of dickin around...

ok fellas......help me out here with your opinions.......

Yeah, the Alpha 8045 is a great cooler. You get the neato 4-hole mounting system w/o the high cost of the Swiftech. Oh, and for reference, you can mount any 80 MM fan on it, so you have several viable options.

Otherwise I'd say you can't go wrong with an SK6 or a Glaciator. I love my SK6, I have my KT7A-Raid voltmodded and it'll handle up to 1.96v on the core or so in the acceptable temp range (less than 50 C). That's with the YS Tech 40.1 CFM.

Mr. B - I'm wondering why you're idling so high.... what's your room temp at?

If I win one from the XP event I'm slapping it in my watercooling rig. I hope to hit 1.8 with it. However, I'm counting on winning the drawing in order to do this.

P.S. nobody show up in Chicago.

how did he break the board? sounds kinda wierd cuz he should have taken teh whole mobo out if he was having problems you don't just rip it off if you can't remove it!

The Taisol has worked wonders for me,
My 1.2 is O/Ced to 1.45 "now" and I'm idleing at 30C and full load 35C.
