First, please keep this thread open by behaving ourselves.
I am having a problem in copying my personal dvd's. I purchased the software "I copy DVD's 2" and downloaded the update as it suggested. I am using an external DVD dual layer burner 16x with 8x memorex media. So I was able to make a couple copies of my stuff, now its acting up. For what ever reason, one of two things will happen. During the ripping stage of copying to hard drive, it will freeze up always at 49%. Can't do anything buy terminate the program through ctrl alt del. If the ripping phase goes through, I will get a problem during the burning stage in which every time, it errors at at 15 seconds left. MS error reporting says that its the Pattin-Couffin.sys having an error. I have removed the programs, and reinstalled them with the same problem. I haven't changed anything on the computer.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

Have you tried different media?
Is it Firewire or USB 2.0?
Have you tried different software? Can you burn CDs using Nero or similar? Can you rip DVDs using something like DVD decrypter?

This is the 2nd post in the last week I have seen about porblems burning DVD with an external burner. Again I am curious abot the total bandwidth through the cables. I know theoreticaly USB 2.0 should have enough bandwidth and I know Firewire does. Maybe the problem lies in poor cables, other devices on the USB bus, and/or the traffic to and from the DVD burner causing the problems.

first off if ur backing up your dvds use dvd decrypter to copy to puter and then use dvd shrink to do the actual encoding. verry easy to use programs. have dvd decrypter set to file mode then have it copy to drive. open up dvd shrink and open files and it will load em up. make sure u use deep analysis and u shold have a copy in just a few hours
Like all computer problems, this has a hardware or software cause. You have to change one to know about the other. As far as ripping goes, the aformentioned DVD Decrypter is the way to go.
As far as burning the files to DVD, I strongly prefer Nero Recode 2. Amazingly fast, amazingly high quality output, and easier to use than a butter knife. DVD Decrypter is freeware (and sadly, no longer being updated), and you can DL a trial version of Nero from their site.
Assuming you do have a stable PC and fresh windows install, if these programs fail the burner is no account. I highly recommend the LG GSA-4163B internal burner if it comes to that. External burners are pretty dicey by the time you get to 16X, with many IDE-USB bridges only passing 12.5MB/s or so, more like 12X rather than 16.
That being said, no 16X burner operates beyond 12X for but a tiny fraction of the burn event, and few exceed 10X on the rip. But nonetheless, USB 2.0 may indeed be problematic in this application. Firewire would be much better, and of course, internal IDE drives like the LG are not expensive.

DVDshrink also works for copying dvds
open up dvd shrink and open files and it will load em up. make sure u use deep analysis and u shold have a copy in just a few hoursNero Recode 2 is based on the same code, and is far easier to use and faster than DVD Shrink. Starting with files on the hard drive via DVD Decrypter, I re-encode a dual layer movie to a single layer DVD+R, using the advanced analysis and high-quality encoding, and burn on the fly in 22-30 minutes on the rig in my sig. Hours is just too slow for my famously limited patience. I can even read from my 16X DVD-ROM drive on the fly also, but doing so adds about as much to the advanced analysis time as DVD Decrypter takes to rip the files to the hard drive.

Thanks for the reply's, I am trying the ideas now, will let you know how it goes.
I want to copy my DVD's to my harddrive so I can take them on the road with me. How do I rip them, and compress them in let's say a DIVX?

i have just started ripping one from my collection using DVD Decrypter and when its finished i imagine the file size to be around 4 gig, after this i'll see if i can just divx converter to compress it into around 700mb divx file.
i have just used dvd decrypter and have coped the files to a folder but that folder is now full of .ifo, .vob, and .bup files. How do i convert these files into 1 file for the film??
