Those things run hot by nature, espally on stock cooling. Look for some aftermarket coolers, like the nv silencer for example

hmm that does seem a tad hot for even the 6800's. Try putting some AS5 under the core and see if it helps much.. or try getting a new cooler for your card, I cant say i really like the stock cooler on that card.

Agreed, the stock cooler looks like a piece of shiiiite.
Reseat the cooler with a good TIM. 71C idle is too hot. google and download a program called 'rthdribl' to see what your load temp is. (load is more important than idle)
yeh idle temps are way too high there m8. i have the xfx 6800gt with stock cooler and it runs 57C idle.

you're joking right? LMFAO
nv silencer for 6800 series = jokes
I'd definately get better cooling though, 71 idle is WAY to high.
If you have some cash to blow (50-70 USDollars), then get a STASISThermal heatisnk, consumer9000 at the forums works for them.

If your idleing that high then you may have case ventilation issues. What is the ambient of your case?
Do you have another hardware monitor which has a thermalcuple on it that you can put on the GPU itself?
This would be a much better way of gauging your heat.
Never trust a software sensor or monitoring program as your final result.
Two reasons...
1. There may be a problem with windows or the installation of the program itself which is displaying improper results.
2. If there is a problem with the probe which is embedded you'll also recieve improper results.
Use a 3rd party sensor before dropping money on an expensive cooler.

while 71C is pretty hot, if you have not yet updated to the newest drivers, the old drivers would cause the cards to idle much hotter than the new drivers. I ordered this, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835118116, it should be here in a few days. All the reviews for it are good and it sounds like it really has some cooling power. It sounds like a great buy the price is excellent.

http://www.stasisthermal.com/ there is the link for Stasis and Consumer9000 is a awesome guy. I wouldn't recommend anything but a Stasis. NV's are a joke.....

temp reach 81 for 6 min only :bang head
My reference cooler cools just as good as my newly slayed NV5, oddly
yup there alot of "NV5's suck" threads latly.
I just ordered that zalman, the all copper version though.
Even though it cools just as good my OC is hindered...and my max load temp is a bit screwed up...im to ghettofy my nv5 silencer HEHE...
I cant wait to play with my zalman lol

These cards run hotter than previous ones, but for your ambient it should be a lot cooler. If you really need some more flow back in emergency before you do something else take off the cover to a pci slot. I would definately upgrade the cooling if I was you.
