View Full Version : 35,000 RPM 80MM Fan!!!

Got bored again! I was digging through my computer parts box, and found an old 80mm power fupply fan that I overvoltaged and burned out. I was thinking about making a really really fast fan, then it hit me...DREMEL! I took the fan apart leaving the blades and the axle, put in the right sized attachment holder(?) for my dremel and put in the blades. Tightened it up, and turned it on. DAMN! It was like a jet on amphetamines! Since the dremel spins counterclockwise, the fan blew blackwards, and it was sucking itself to the floor, considaring I was holding it upside down. This sounds like it might be a good way to burst cool a case. Also, I ran it for a few minutes and it stayed relatively cool, but when I turned it off, all of the heat ran to the surface and it got warm, not hot, but pretty warm.

ouch, I was trying to figure out a way to get it to cool my comp really good, and it caught my wrist, made me waste about 5 band aids...

And I was just about to say wait until the blades explode and tear out your eyes while your trying to "burst cool" your case.

Yea, I was worried about that, but I was looking at the blades and they are pretty thick, about 3 mm.

what exactly do you mean by dremel?

It's a small handheld tool used for grinding, cutting, and routing. The attachments come in all shapes and sizes.

Whooa that sound dangerous!
Yeah.... I feel the pain. Another overvoltaged, totaly burned out PS fan. Only I held the axle on a pair of pliers and turned on my house circulating fan. If you've ever owned a Patton fan, you know how much air those baby's put out! Well, needless to say, the pliers sliped, and my finger was missing a descent sized chunk of skin. Only needed one band-aid though!
Only burst cool with the proprer safety gear! :D

I wouln't put a lot on the lifespan of that dremel motor!
How loud was it?

Sounds nutty. Dremels aren't made to run as fans, and if you really want a 15 KRPM fan, they're available (although you won't sleep mush if your comp's in your bedroom). If you're into bragging rights, most people would stop at about 7 KRPM, so you'd have a definite edge.
Perhaps you were just messing arouns, though and don't want anyhting crazy like that.
Remember: It's all fun and games until someone gets an eye poked out. Or a hand sawn off. Or worse, a CPU or RAM stick broken.

if you really want to burst cool you case, a airosol can on the heatsink will work
If you really want to get crazy you could use an r/c car motor. A 9T 6wind motor will probably hit about 45,000 rpm. I have a few lying around, hehe. Im not sure how much cfms it moves, but you could buy an r/c plane propeller and itll fit perfectly onto the motor.
**hmm, just noticed how long my sig is, lol. Ill have to shorten it.**

put the 2 colums side by side and tha tway you stilll get all data and haltf the space. that is if it will fit, but if not just use a smaller font.

How do you do that??? I tried it and it ended up just lookin all screwy... I'd love to put em side by side...

Its all fun and games till somebody loses an eye, then it becomes a scavanger hunt!

no, no, no, it's NOT fun and games UNTIL someone loses an eye

Do you mean that it's not fun in the first place or that we shouldn't treat the loss or body parts so lightly?

I seriously recommend anyone trying this craziness wear eye protection at the very least, and make sure your health insurance is up to snuff should a fragment of a fan blade come flying off or the dang fan itself come at you if not tightened properly.

Oh my! A dremel wouldn't push a fan for long, and it would be loud as hell.
Anyway, look at my Minnesota Winter Cooling (*patent pending) thread. (just kidding about the patent) I made myself laugh with that...you do not need to.
My buddy just emailed me and told me to just put my computer outside, with the wires leading inside. I probably won't do that, but it is interesting to read about the lengths people will go to cool down their computers!
Here's another idea: ever heard of those internal vacuuming systems that newer houses have? expensive, but they could suck a lot of air through your computer with no noise...
later.
Christoph

I agree; the lengths we'll go to are rather ridiculous. I guess that it's the joy of cooling.
Also, flounder, no jokes intended, but how many other attorneys do this sort of thing for fun? It seems to break a stereotype of mine (not that stereotypes reflect reality).

Hey Idea,
I don't know of any others. I have always been a bit of a computer geek, going back to my commodore vic 20.
Ironically, there is no way an Intellectual Property firm would ever hire me because I don't have an Engineering Degree! I guess I should put 'Avid Overclocker' on my resume and see what happens!
Later.

Why don't you just buy some of these 80mm babies from Delta. They blow like a propeller (at about the same noise level *hehe*).
I got 4 60mm Deltas, which make 47dB each attached on a Zern Server-Raddi, 2 80mm Deltas (56dB each) on the modded Senfu Dual Radiator and another 2 Papst NGH 80mm fans on the Radiator for the GF3.
I can hear the "thing" through 2 closed doors. When playing or listening to music it's okay, but only as long as I keep the headset on *hehe*. :p
Christoph
10-19-01, 09:12 AM
That's insane! Two closed doors. As long as you're fine with and I can't hear it.
Half the reason I'm going to use a bong cooler is the gentle hum of the motor and a pleasant waterfall noise will be the only nioses my computer cooling system will make. Sorry if that was hard to understand; I'm still a little bit aslee... <zzzzzzz>

My friend Tom Stage says that he has seen 15k RPM fans in a dual Britney rackmount server!
Holy Thread Resurection!!
Is this a record?

IMHO all of these computer fans on anything that can spin them with the power of a dremel or electric/gas/glow R/C engine should be deleted for all time for being dangerous.
Jesus Chirst when will this idiotic sh|t end? When all of you actually get's *seriously* mamed???

When you realize that we dont care about your opinion? When will you realize that its human nature to try new things? When will you realize that its also human nature to be creative? When will you realize that you are ghetto? I have already realized that I am a ******. I have also realized that my realization is what makes me better. Get over it.
Seriously Maimed! SERIOUSLY MAIMED!!! :D

Depends on a few things. If they ghetto-rigged it by just pulling out the fan bit then it it is very dangerous. Had they been clever and kept the fan housing then if a blade shatters lots of the blades' kinetic energy is lost as it hits the fan housing, and it can therefore do less damage. Of course that's a harder mod. Like in life, the more time you put into an idea the better it gets.
Oh, and Toysrme, You are right. Deleting threads like this wouldn't be the worst idea in the world but you don't have to dodge the swear filter ;)

Im not flaming here, but I have a question. I noticed you were from the UK. I was wondering why EVERY person from over there is super conservative? With the exception of the Germans (which is what I am, we had some weird stuff on TV, and people were def. not conservative.) Also...your comedy shows are not funny. I just sit there, see nothing funny, while everyone else is about to fall out of their chair! I dont understand it. I need to educated in the ways of your people.

It depends what you mean by conservative. in many cases the US is more stringent:
Less people are religious here, the drinking age is lower (18), the age of consent is lower (16), and the British government is a lot more liberal and left-wing than the US administration. I don't know where you got the idea, or do you mean a different type of conservatism i'm not familiar with?

I mean that you are always afriad to try new stuff. Everything is dulled down. Like on the forums...someone made a joke about me haveing warez on my computer (which I dont) and one of the British mods deleted the WHOLE THREAD saying it would have hurt my reputation here (like I have much of one anywayz), when it was just a joke.

We only have one Brit mod I think (UnseenMenace) and I think he was acting in your best interests. In all honesty you should take it up with him and ask, I have no idea.....

Yeah, maimed heh... Thanks ;)
Oh, and yes, it is extreamly dangerous. The second you stick one of these fans on something that *actually* has the power to spin one near that fast.
That will be the day you learn how patheticly intolerant our fan assemblies are. There is a reason "real" ducted fans are at the least high test carbon fiber.
I literally had to think for sevrial min before comming to the conclution that these should be deleted... I hope to god a mod kills them off too.
Then again at some point you have to take into account the wide band of audiance here and the fact that someone here is going to be enough of a combination of "Young, dumb, and full fo cum" try it and get hurt.
Like so many other things there is a fine balance that should be walked in free speech here...
It's not the forum's or poster's fault when someone get's hurt. Everyone is of their own free will. Then again THIS forum should not IMHO be the one that gives such dangerous ideas.
That should be left to shows like Jackass. I have no desire to see the type of people on this forum that I tend to like get senselessly hurt. There is no need what-so-ever to turn this into:
Joe Citarella, Skip MacWilliam, and Ed Stroligo present:
Jackass, the lame computer version...

I don't see your point in wanting these posts deleted. Honestly, your reasoning makes no sense: In the case forums, dremels are discussed in every other thread. A dremel in and of themselves are dangerous. A microscopic piece of sandpaper spinning at over 30,000rpms to cut holes in your case -- imagine what those things could do to your hands (albiet I use gloves, which even still provides little protection other than keeping my hands from sweating due to the excessive heat they put out)...
What I'm trying to get at is.. let it be. If someone wants to be stupid, let them. Just warn them of the repurcussions, and suggest safety tips. Its like jumping off 30ft cliffs into a lake -- its dangerous, but who are you to stop them?

Well then, perhaps leaving the threads here will allow it to serve as words of advice and convince someone else not to do it.
or something...

Or we could just continue to pointlessly argue........
heh. I say that it's really up to the judgement of the audience. However, I would really hate to see anyone from the forums be blamed for something by a parent and taken to court or something like that. Considering the amount of minors that frequent the forums, it's a very big possibility that any of their parents can be overprotective or overreact about it and blame it on either the person who suggested it, the forums staff, or even Skip. That's something we definitely do not want to happen. While I'm all for experimenting and getting new things to work, I would suggest disclaimers and warnings about any experiments that are remotely dangerous. Frivolous lawsuits still exist, unfortunately.
I don't think this thread should be deleted, however. I like the ideas presented. I just think a disclaimer on it would make it safe against any legal stuff.

To be honest, any nimor that manages to "play" with a drill is really beyond our control. Considering how insane this mod is I'd say it's fairly obvious. Ah, well....
