So they have these (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130239) now at the egg?

It says 445mhz GPU, but isn't that more than the regulat GTXs? The memory is at 1076mhz, which is 123mhz less than the normal 1200mhz, but I'm confused. If this is also 24 pipeline, then the only thing that is worse is the memory, and the core on this is more powerful than the default 430mhz GPU that the 7800GTX has.

Alright, so the 7800GT cards are out!

Damn, these are such freakin' good deals!!!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150108

That comes with 450 core what the heck? The only thing that's lower than a GTX is the memory, and by less than 10%. Wow, these prices are insane!

Egg is still listing them as GTX's, that will be fixed soon since its a new product and they do the same thing with other stuff as well.

I'm still not going to get one, waiting for 6800U to drop some more and get another one in SLI.

Not really... they say 1000mhz memory and some of the OCed ones say 1050mhz, 1070mhz, and 1076mhz memory... that is NOT GTX spex. That is less.

Also, I noticed some GPU spex say 400mhz, and some say 445 and 450, meaning some are possibly OCed, but there definitely was one that said 400/1000, which seems in the correct range.

Then these are definitely defected GTX's if those clocks are right.

well after looking around at many places....unlocking these cards just isn't going to happen...so it looks like people that buy them will be stuck with the 20pipes and 7shaders

I just placed an order for this (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?p=3900076#post3900076) . It should be interesting to see how it stacks up against my 7800GTX. For that price I can't see the GTX being worth the extra money unless it can be had for around $400.

is it worth the upgrade from 6800GT AGP to 7800GT PCI-E?

As long as it slashes the price of a 6800GT, I'll be happy :)

I'm curious about the unlocking opportunities this presents.

Direct Quote outta guru3d's review,

"At this point I have spend no more than a couple of minutes in figuring out if the disabled Pipelines and Vertex units should be able to get unlocked, unfortionately that's just not the case though.

As you can see, the pixel pipes are configured as quads (units of four), we see 6x4 (24 pipes) of them with one quad (4 pipes) disabled. When we look at the Vertex units we see that indeed one unit is disabled. Likely if you can enable the quad or vertex unit properly you have a high chance of it being damaged anyway. It's fun to play arround with in Rivatuner though, yet after a reboot and a third try to 'strap' the driver it still did not kick in at all. Maybe in a future version of Rivatuner, who knows.

I just had a quick chat with uber guru and RivaTuner programmer Alexey, and at this time it looks like you can not unlock the pipes by patching the drivers due to a new protection. NVIDIA uses a similar protection on NV41 and new revisions of NV43 (A4 and newer). I'm afraid that they use the same stuff on G70

And hey. If you do not have a clue what I just wrote, don't even think of trying this please."

Very good. I'm glad that was cleared up. Now we see where the real price difference came from. :)

So since we normally see 3 options in a series what would the 3rd one be, more powerful than the GTX or less powerful than the GT?

Not at all. Why would you think so?

We have the x800pro, the x800xt, and the x800xt pe. (same sequence with the 850).

We have the 6800NU, the 6800GT, and the 6800Ultra.

Now, we have the 7800GT, the 7800GTX, and what would the third be?

I don't think that's possible really, and if it were it would probably be harder to do that than to make one with 20 pipes.

Basically, they have 24 pipelines, but 4 are probably bad, just like the difference between the x800xt (or pe) at 16 pipelines, and the x800 pro at 12 pipelines, and the difference between the 6800gt (or ultra) at 16 pipelines, and the 6800NU at 12 pipelines.

The 7800GTX is 24 pipelines, and the GT has 4 either disengaged or probably dead (I'm assuming). I don't see it ever possible of 18 pipelines being around. It would probably more work for them to do that, and quite pointless. I think the 3rd 7800 would just be a non-ultra or something, and would be 20 pipelines with lower clock speeds. Maybe slightly less core, and 700-800mhz memory... who knows.

Ugh, I think the early reviews of the 7800gts have convinced me to dump my new x850 xt pe on ebay and get a 7800 gt as a replacement. Sorry ATI...

Dual cores ?? maybe ..

To Vulcan .. I dont think thats a enough of a performance boost to justify selling your current card and buying the 7800gt
