Hello there -

I am in the process of getting a new setup together and was looking around at newegg - 6600gt or 6800 non gt?

MB: Abit A8N-SLI
CPU: Venice 3000+

Looking to get one cars now and another around xmas... any advantages to go with the 6800??

Links:

6600GT (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130214)

6800 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130236)

My budget is around $200 - Thanks for any input!

The 6800 will give you better performance. Depending on the specific card you might be able to unlock the extra pipes.

This should give you some idea as well. http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=391118&highlight=unlock+6800+vanilla

The 6800 Pci-e will give you 12 pipes and 5 shaders.
The 6600 Pci-e will only give you 8 Pipes and 4 shaders.

As far as i have seen the 6800nu/ngt will not unlock extra pipes because they do not exist on the Pci-e version. However you will have more video capability then the 6600.
You will also be able to run them in SLI which could work out pretty well.

Just something to think about.

Trough the tests 6600GT leads on the low graphic quality - for example 1024x768 noAA noAF, but on the high quality 6800 leads because of the 256bit and more pipes and shader.. so IMHO your choise is 6800 + overclocking it...

If you wait for the prices to drop some more with their new cards coming out you might be able to find a 6800gt or equivalent for around your 200 bucks range.

Yet if it was between the 6600gt or the 6800nu, I would go for the 6800nu then oc the hell out of it.

Yes SLI for both the 6600 and the 6800.You can also run mixed mode like a 6800Gt and a 660GT, or a 7800GTX and a 6600Gt.Or any combination in between. So if cost is a issue then get Horsepower first then get cost effective second.

OK new question - I think I have found the card I am getting -6800 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814125193) - the only reason I picked this one is because it is the only one with 256mb and OpenGL2.0 - the rest of them are OpenGL 1.5 - this is prob a noob question but what is the dif between 1.5 and 2.0? I am assuming that 2.0 is better... enlighten me please!

This BFG 6800 Pci-e (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814143030) is Open GL 2.0 as well.I have heard great things of overclocking out of BFG.

In the Begining,
What I think Nvidia has done is make one 6800 core revision. The first one being the 16x6 with Open GL 1.5 ,etc. etc. .
But then came the Advent of PCI-e which allowed them to make two 6800 cores the 6800 12x5 (no unlocking because they do not exist pipes and shaders(also meaning increased revinue from not buying the GT and getting Ultra out of it)) PCI-e and the 6800 16x6 fully buit for PCI-e.Notice they don't have a bridge chip.My MSI 6800GT has a tiny chip under the core which is not as big as the 6600gt's bridge chip but there none the less. Will take pictures to show it.It runs fine probably willing to say it runs better then my AGP XFX 6800gt.
