Hi I want to dual boot 98se and 2kpro on the main sytem but I seem to be haveing some troubles.

So I installed 98se after deleting all the partitions (1) and reformatting the HDD then I went into fdisk the create a extended partition (2nd) but it said I didnt have the space well its hard to believe since at the time I had 38G free whats up with that? So then I thought ok I'll just try to get the 2kpro cd to create the 2nd partition during instalation well in the section were it asks you the press enter to setup on the selected partition and C to create a new patition and F3 or F8 to exit I would press C but nothing would happen , argg I know if I if I continued with that install 98se and 2kpro would have been installed on the same partition.

What do I need to do can I create the partitions before formatting or just before installing an OS? Help , ouh ya if you cant tell I am only useing FDISK I dont have partition magic or anything.

ok, first of all, delete all your current partitions, and format your HD.

After that, choose to create a Dos Partition

Then choose to create a primary dos partition

When it asks if you wanna use the maximum size choose NO, then set the size of the first partition

Then go back and choose to set that partition as the Active Partition

Next go back to the main screen and choose to make an Extended Partition

Then again set the size of it

now you can go back to the main dos screen and install Windows 98 on to the C: partitioin

after win98 is done, stick in your Windows 2000 disk

When it asks if you want to upgrade choose NO

when youre in the setup wizard choose to do a Clean Install

On the next screen click the Advanced Options button

Select I Want To Choose Partition

and from there you should be able to figure it out. Ive done this about 6 times.....might be a little off cause its off the top of my head. When youre installing Win2k, if it says that you can only do an NTFS file system, go back and format the D: partition.

I hope i answered your question right, i didnt read over the whole thing:D

Nuke your partitions.
Install Windows 2000 w/ FAT32

Yes i agree, you install 98 first, then boot it up, stick in the 2k cd and install that way. My post was long because i was trying to really explain the whole proccess.

I think it should be done w/ 2000 first. That way, 2000 handles all of the dual boot procedures (ie, selecting the os to be booted to etc). No third party programs, no messing w/ .ini files.

Install 98 first then install 2k from inside of that, youll have the option of what partition to install it on (its all explained in my loooong first post).
Ive done this at least 6 times now with no trouble
Those steps are also outlined in this 1300+ page win2k book i have.
