Hey People

I've pretty much decided that i"ll be getting a 6600gt as my next card. Now the main reason I'm upgrading is primarily so that I can play F.E.A.R and Battlefield2.

Now, looking at the F.E.A.R system requirements it recommends a 256MB card for the game and since I don't actually plan on shifting from AGP for quite a while would it make sense to get a 256MB card instead of the standard 128MB card? I don't play games above the 1024.768 res so I don't think a higher card is going to be a valid choice here :S

I know that 256MB is semi-pointless on a card such as this, but as I said above, I"m with AGP for the long haul. I do plan on adding another 1GB of ram to my system so lets just take that out of the equation. Bare in mind that a 6800series card is still about 150$ dearer than a 256MB 6600gt in NZ ;)

Any thoughts, suggestions and ideas?

Cheers
Goateh :sn:

Are you talking 256MB DDR3? That would be a huge boost in real life games. In benches it shouldn't have too much of an affect.

What 6800 series are you trying to compare it too?

(edit) Whoops. double post:)

Just the stock standard vanilla 6800s. Yeah it would be 256mb ddr3 as thats the only 256 AGP one I can find :)

edit: Hrmm its gonna cost about $120 more for the extra 128mb memory... would that really be worth the money?

Id wait for the prices of the 6800s to fall

It is tempting, but I don't really see that happening too soon in NZ. Our 6800U are still 750$, heck, our 6800GTs are still 550$ :S

Can I ask what settings you were using?

edit: I really doubt it runs like crap, I can run it on my 9500pro 800x600 with low/med settings :)

edit edit: Would it be a sensible choice to get a 6600 non-gt and just OC it to GT levels?

my system with 6600gt runs it @ 1024x768 @ med settings around 20-30fps, which i find to be almost unplayable. My system with my x800xl runs it @ 1280x720 @ high settings, no AA at an average of 50fps but it constantly drops to the 20's which also drives me crazy, which is why im getting R520 the day it comes out or G70 if R520 doesnt turn out to be as good as it should be.

It will kill the 6800 vanillas, and ya that ddr3 is expensive memory. I think you would be better off getting something with a better core with that kind of extra cash.

You can only get a vanilla at the same price that you would pay for the 256MB?

Unfortunately so, even then the vanilla is still a little more expensive

Maybe I am getting the vanilla confused with something else.

I haven't seen any benches with the vanilla unless it has a different street name.
