I bought and installed the Cooler Master Real Power 550 in May 2005.

Strangely, it shuts down for no apparent reason. Sometimes it will shut down several times during a day of use. The system can run for days without a shut down as well. I'll be in some application, then it is as if someone pulled the plug.

My system is not pulling much power. I needed a new power supply so bought one which I thought would be good for a future build of an AMD system with a SLI motherboard.

In this system which shuts down intermittently, I have an Asus P4P800E, P4 2.66, 1GB DDRAM, 2 HDD, 2 optical drives and plenty of cooling. Power into the system is conditioned via an APC UPS.

Has anyone else besides Tomshardware.com experienced shut down problem with this unit? Have you heard of any solution to this?

are you sure it's the PSU that is the problem?

you're not really using that much power. Unless you have a defective unit, I wouldn't expect you to load it with your current setup enough to cause it to power off.

does it only shut down when you are doing something, or does it also do so at idle?

I have not seen it shut down while being idle. Of course, I am usually only at the computer while running some application. If I go away leaving the computer on with no app running; and come back to find it off, it may be that the one of my sons turned it off or that the computer shut down for some unknown reason.

I am leaning towards the conclusion that this powersupply is defective in some way. The same model unit shut down in tomshardware.com test of power supplies; although that was under full load (I think).
