For those of you that just joined our team, please post here so I can get your name on our list. We have a few people that will donat their machines to fold under your name for 3 days to help you get a boost in the stats.

Fold on my brothers!

Bill.

I'm not too worried other helping me to boost my stats (I'm just folding best I can on my own...),

But can you guys tell me how I can check MY stats - from what I can tell I can only see the top few people... Even if I have next to no WUs done, I'd like to see what contribution I am making...

And what was this whole deal with Stanman? Sounds like it was not a happy situation, but that's all I can seem to figure out.

And don't worry about me dropping, unless my power bills totally skyrocket or something. In fact, I've been trying to convince some of my friends to put it on their machine, as well as my mom :-)

I've been trying to check the stats like ploaf suggested, but I'm not getting any results... WTF did I do wrong?
I type in my user name "mrilock", as well as "mrilock (www.overclockers.com)" but I don't get anything. I'm thoroughly confused because this is how I wrote in my username when I first downloaded the client...
Now I'm just plain worried that I'm not helping the cause any :-(

Now I'm just plain worried that I'm not helping the cause any :-( Mrilock, I just checked the stats and don't see your name. Go to the folding a home folder in windows explorer open the folder and find the file named client. Delete the file, and close windows explorer. Go to start, programs, folding@home, Folding@Home(console) and click. When the program gets to user name, type: mrilock(www.overclockers.com) and hit enter. If you want the computer to go on line by itself to get a new client type yes to the next question. If you don't have a firewall in place type no to the next question and then press enter. This should load a client and start working it assuming you're online. I broke it down this far because I don't know your level of experience. Hope this helps. Welcome to the club:).

If you just started today or even last night then give it some time. It may take until tonight or even tomorrow morning for it to show up. There is a delay in the stats for new folders.

edit----I forgot to ask whether you are using the screensaver or the console version? The screensaver version has a bug in it that causes it to not give you proper credit and you have to manually edit the client.cfg file----/edit

mrilock
10-14-01, 06:00 PM
I had the screensaver and the console version installed. I just ripped the screensaver off of the computer.

I did do a little research, so I knew how to join the team with name and parentheses, but I guess the screensaver was screwing it up... damn and I was nearly through another unit...

I'm going to totally delete all this stuff off of my comp, then re-install to make sure everything is perfect. damn. Thanks for the help

The easiest way would be to:

1) Go to the Stanford web site (see other posts in the Forum about Release 2.0 of the F@H program) and install it.
2) Delete the client.cfg file from your F@H directory.
3) Launch the new F@H program and it should prompt you to enter you name (just put in the name you want).
4) Then enter 32 for the team number. That is our 2.0 team number.

That's it.

And....WELCOME TO THE TEAM :D :D

Kewl... But do I get to keep the WU's that Ive already finished? Or are those lost?

T. J.
10-17-01, 07:34 AM
ifmu- I don't believe there is anyway to get credit for work previously completed under a different name. If you switch to 2.0 like DB said, just set it up with the name you want and go from there. We may all be starting from scratch with version 2.0 if they don't combine the stats, so just go for it! Welcome to the team, and fold on! :D :D :D

Welcome to the Team !!! :D :D :D

Depending on how fast you finish your work plus the time it takes for Stanford to update (3 hours or so), it could be some time until you see your first WU post.

Check your client.cfg file in you F@H directory to make sure your team = 32 and that you have a user ID.

Welcome again, one and all !!

I'll have to modify it to make it appear in the forum, but .....

You can make a link to the official team page....

By putting this in your sig

(url=http://www.overclockers.ws/folding)Folding@Home(/url)

Replace these "(" ")" with these '[' ']'. Without the quotes.
Not sure if the official site is up but the current site is available at http://www.cythraul.com/folding - Thanks Ebola for hosting and updating the site. :D

Hey gents,
I was talked into joining folding by flounder43. It didn't take much convincing since I'm in the Long Term Care business and any way I can help find a cure for Alzheimer the better. I installed folding on my new AMD XP (that I just won) and my old 500 k6-2 laptop. I hope to have another running soon as I rebuild my 800 duron that I cannibalized when I won my new XP.

I can get proably 20-50 computers here at Calvin.edu to fold in their spare time, but I need to work out a problem.

Maybe its just the server, cause it can connect to the stanford server to get a COMP ID #.

But when it goes from there it only says

 "Could not get work instructions (retrying in 5 minutes)"

I have a proxy firewall here, but it gets through with the settings set correctly.

Are any new folding members getting this error? Are the "new member" servers not up right now?

Thanks and BTW

I have had that error on my home network (no firewall, just NAT). But, it was always resolved by just retrying. It could be that the server that assigns work is down at the moment.

I'm sure someone else has set up through a firewall so there may be someone more in the know than me.

Try again and see if you have better luck.

And, by the way, 25-50 computers would be, well, AWESOME !!!

Hi All

I joined your folding team last night. I am showing up in the stats so it must be working. It is not necessary to donate cpu time for my personal stats, I'm here to help the team.

Add one watercooled Thunderbird @ 1.55 Geezers to your list. Plan to have another box going the same or faster in a week or two.

I have been around Overclockers.com for a couple of years but have never been active in the forums. Never reregistered since they went to the new forum program, thats why this is going to show as my first post.

Good luck, I will try and recruit more boxes.

to bump up someone's stats means when we get new members to the fold some need/ask us to bump up their stats. In other words someone else in the fold is asked to fold under that person's name to give him a jumpstart in the rankings.

Boy914

Welcome Everyone !

We'll need to see what TT120 and sfa have to say about the stats bump.

Many people were way up in the stats and would donate a machine to an new user for a few days to give them a jump start.

But now basically everyone is only a week or two in to the new stats so there are not many people out ahead of each other (except you Stanman :D ).

Not to say it will not happen, just giving some background info.

Great to have you all aboard and Fold On...;)

I have some questions but I'm going to read the other threads first;) Until then.........Keep folding

If you are using Win98 or 2000, read the Windows help and look for Internet Connection Sharing and it should explain everything.

Hey Imfu,
Why dont you use that K62 -ive got one at 300 and another at 500 folding. they are really slow but every bit helps. The 300 takes about 2 days to fold 1 wu and my 500 laptop cand do about 1 every 1.5 days-they are not bing used for anything else so what not put them to good work right? my 1800 xp running at 1.66 folds just a tad faster.;)

Hi all.

I just started a thread called "We are falling behind!!!" I didn't want to mention this there, but I'm working on getting four computer labs full of P3 866 MHz computers to join our cause (about 80 comps total). I'm friends with the lab supervisor, and he said that they were having trouble with Genome@Home, so he will take some convincing. Also, I have permission to install the client on about 12 new comps (not sure of speed yet) in a different lab, I just need to get the correct access.

I'll let you know how it goes.

That would be fantastic !!! Maybe you can even convince the lab super to move some (if not all) the machines to FAH instead of GAH. Anything helps.

If you need any help on that, please let us know. It'd be great to get more horsepower on the Team !

When running the folding@home program, it says my cpu usage is all the way up. Will it decrease the life of my cpu if it is running constantly? My concern is because I see my CPU temps go up...

THanks

Dunga Bee
11-04-01, 10:53 PM
Depends on the actual temps. Generally speaking, it will not decrease the life of the CPU. Now, if your temps go really high, it could kill your CPU, so you should be sure that your cooling is sufficient.

What are your temps after running FAH for a while ?

26C when just surfing or word processing w/out Folding@home.
and 35C-37C with Folding@Home. Under total load I'm running like 47C. This is with using a program called VCool.. it does wonders to cool CPU. This is just using a the Heat sink that came with the CPU and a 80mm fan ( because the piece of crap one that came with it broke .)

]-[itman
11-04-01, 11:02 PM
if you're really worried about it and have the money i'd get a better heatsink. Also, if you don't have Arctic Silver II on there, it'll help cool the cpu.

Kendan
11-04-01, 11:03 PM
Vcool only lowers your idle temps it does nothing when you are folding. those temps are pretty good for the stock heatsink.

11-04-01, 11:04 PM
Today I just put some Antec Silver compound on. I know it isnt the best stuff to buy but it was the closest thing i could get. And i dont have any money to go out and buy a new HSF that would cool it better like a copper one.

Those temps are fine and actually pretty decent for stock cooling. As long as you stay at or very near to 50C, you should be fine. Not until you hit the mid 50s do you usually start to see lockup and such.

Hey ! Welcome to the Team !!!

If you are using the graphical version (little gear in your system tray), you are set.

If you are using the text only console, then you need to end the client and restart it to be sure you were assigned a unique ID by the Stanford server (little bug in the text only version).

Yes, you can and should leave it run all the time. It will send results and get more work automatically. It runs at a low priority and will not interfere with anything else you do on your PC.

Depending on the speed of your computer it may be a day or so until you see your results posted on the web. There is a good stats page here (http://www.statsman.org/folding2stats/) .

First of all, BeBop Bolton, Welcome! You are a member of the team now. Is your Folding name also 'BeBop Bolton'?

Yes, when work units are finished, they are automatically sent back.

Yes, you will be at full load all the time while running Folding. If you have good cooling, don't worry. It shouldn't have any effect on performance. If you have bad cooling, WORRY (and get good cooling!).

Again, welcome!

120F = 49C = You are fine.

Cooler is always better but anything below 52 or so is fine. It will not harm your equipment to run at that temp.

Folding is slow. For your CPU it may take an hour or two to finish a protein.

Post a message in the forum about the particular protein you are folding asking for other people's times and you'll get responses that you can compare to (I have never measured my times).

What is your system info? It will help giving you advise on a program. Or you could check in the bios but that doesn't help reading your load temp.

BigBlockk be the name. Ran one work unit last night. Thing took like 10 hours to finish. This sound about right for a 1Ghz PIII?

Working on my second one now. Timed one frame at 9min. 7sec. That works out to 15 hours. I gotta be doin something wrong hear. Any ideas?

Welcome to the team. We're glad to have you on board.

11-20-01, 11:05 AM
Well, I guess yall know more 'bout this stuff than me so I'll take your word. I got two fsb settings (140 @ 150) left on my Gigabyte AT board. Got to get some temp. readings first though. Math tells me that I can push it to 1125Mhz. Wonder if the stock 'sink can do it? Might just need to get out the old Alpha 66. The only bad thing 'bout that is listenin to that damned Delta 38. The original "fan from hell".

First I got to get something hooked up to tell me die temp. on the fly.

You know, come to think of it, I've seen w/u times in the fold monitor log of upper 400's and lower 500's, so some of them average over 5 minutes per frame. I even have one that took over 1200 minutes. Don't know why.

Sucked it up and went to 150Fsb with the stock sink and fan. Seems to be ok after 1 hour. Going from 1000Mhz to 1125Mhz cut the frame time from 9min and some change to 8min on the dot. Hope it continues to go well. Wouldn't want to toast my $190 PIII.

Made a deal with the brat. She gets some more ram for her machine (an 850 Athlon) I get it folding for me. We'll try to get 1050Mhz out of it. May need to put the Alpha on it, but then it will be in her room (that would be the basement aka THE PIT) so I won't have to hear it.

It finally got through the old gray matter this evening. I should have got an 850 PIII for a 100fFsb. That way I could take it to 1200Mhz on my little Gigabyte board.

Oh well.

Don't have your screensaver on f@h. When the graphics come up it'll slow the folding down. You can choose any other screesaver you want to. Also, don't have the window showing your progress open either. You can check it when you want but leaving it open slows it down too.

Hey. I just joined about 2 weeks ago. I think it's great to contribute to a good cause, and I look forward to what may come of our efforts. Heheh, just started running F@H during the day, now that I'm somewhat sure my watercooler or computer won't crash.

Quick question, is the new version 2.15 any better than 2.12, I don't wanna upgrade and have a problem, but it would be cool if it cracked more WU's quicker?

I don't think 2.15 is any faster but it fixes the bugs that 2.12 has. It's worth the upgrade if you can. Remember that all the versions coming out are still beta versions so you want the newest one. Welcome to the team! Nice oc too.

I just installed the client on my Intel system and have a question: Where it says WU progress I'm reading 5/100 presently, does that mean 5/100 of a WU or 5 WU out of 100. Thanks in advance for any help. Glad to be donating my spare cycles to a good cause.

muddocktor,

5 frames out of 100 frames. 100 frames = 1 work unit.
so, yeah, 5/100 of a WU.

welcome to the group!

Hi fellow Folders, I've been a member for about a week now.
I have added a celery 400@500 mhz(my first overclock) and an XP1800+ to the mix. The celery overclock was too easy and also a guinney pig to boost my confidence, I didn't overclock the XP1800 because I wanted it to be portable and very stable.

I am currently working on an XP1900+ with chilled water cooling and planning to overclock at least to the equivalent of a 2200+ ......wish me luck !
I will also add this one to the mix but it looks like it will be January before I can squeeze out enough mulah to purchase dual drives for RAID and 1GIG of PC 2700 memory.

I also have to thank all of you guys here at OC'S for answering my questions, giving me the confidence and the addiction to overclock, you've turned me into a junkie......I need more, much much more!!!

THANK YOU ALL:burn:

Welcome to the Team. :D
We are team 32. The stats are located here http://folding.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/teampage?q=32

You won't appear in the stats until after you have turned in the first wu to Stanford. After you send it back it may take half a day or so for them to update, but if everything is configured properly then you should show up in the stats.

I began folding again. I had to download the new 2.0 version and edit the client.cfg file. Then I entered added my name and edited the team number to 32. I think I did it correctly, I'll check in a day or two.

Anyhow, I added 4 dual 1GHz machines today and those will fold 24/7, unless something drastic happens to them. I'm also going to redo my F@H install on the older machine that way all the machines are running version 2.0.

AHHHHHHHHHH YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAH!

Those dual 1G machines should do really well. :)

If you need to edit the client.cfg again you can do it by using the
-config flag when running the client. It will ask for your information and you can edit it through the folding software, which is preferable with folding2.

BTW. I noticed that this thread is really out of date. I was wondering if we could get a new 'new folders' thread with fresh info. Half of the thread is from 1.34.
Just a suggestion. :)

You can check your stats here-

There is more information at the team site which is linked to in my sig and we are currently working on a faq for the forum and it is listed under Faq, but you may have to look for it.

If your using the graphical version you should right click on the folding icon and go to the config to make sure your user name is in there how you want it and the yeam number is set to 32. If you do make changes in the middle of a WU you will need to shut down the program and go into the program files and delete the work file then run the folding client again then you will recieve credit.

Welcome to the team!

No you will want to check this before you finish your first WU (if its wrong change it - shut down the program - delete the work file - restart the program). If folding#home is running now look in the lower left hand corner of you system tray and right click on the little red gear looking thing and then you can check you configuration.

12-20-01, 11:59 PM

You're right. :) You do have to wait for the first wu to be sent in and then it can take some time before they update the stats but it's usually within 1/2day.

Hey, now that its been a bit cooler down here in Florida, I'm gonna start folding 24/7 again.. and use my PC as a heater

I also lapped my heatsink recently and got some good temp drops, further justifying the 100% CPU utilization.. Its just a K6-2 (soon to be K6-2+) but I might get an Athlon 1.4 and a few other machines on the job, too.

I always leave my computer running overnight downloading or uploading stuff, so should i just keep running the program.

Fightingpiper
12-28-01, 04:38 AM
Yep just run it all the time. It only uses CPU cycles that your not using. so if you are downloading a big file it wont take away any resources it just goes idle until it has some cpu power.

Hi

Just joined the team. No clue how the team thing works, tho'. I was on UD earlier but I can't seem to be able to get it to work, so I'm Folding now.

Got two machines on this: My home comp (as below, but now running with a 145 bus speed@1466Hz, now giving me a 1700+ XP rating) which will be running in the evenings and on weekends, and my work machine (I'm gonna try persuade my boss to put this thing on all machines at work) which is a really bad Celly 433.

Just sad my home machine can't be on this all week.

Fightingpiper,

Just read your post. Flounder43 is getting really close. I added a pentium 200 for a while, but 1 work unit a week just didn't seem worth the electricity it used.

You're doing pretty good, too. Are the 2 boxes in your sig the only 2 you're running?

Flounder43 may pass me if I keep having problems. Like this morning, my internet server computer (the o/c'ed bird) was locked up with a blue screen. The other 2 were just sitting there waiting for work. Bummer. Glad I checked it before I left.

Fold on, my friends. Fold on! Catch me if you can!

Fightingpiper
12-31-01, 01:31 PM
No I have 2 others folding but they aren't much. One is my 500 K6 laptop and the other is my girlfriends 300 k62 HP. Right now the 300 HP is doing a Frame every 56min and the 500 laptop is doing one every 32 minutes. Thats compared to the Duron doing one every 6 minutes and the XP doing one every 3.5 minutes.

BTW Flounder has just upgraded one of his 750 Durons to a 1.3 tbird so he is comming after you a bit faster now.... Fold on!!!

NedClocker
12-31-01, 02:02 PM
Holy cpu cycle, batman! He's only 4 points behind me now!!!!!

And, I've posted nothing but ZEROS on the last 4 updates!
Yikes! Something must be screwed up again. I hate windows. I'm not going home tonight, so it'll stay screwed up until tomorrow. Ouch, that's gonna hurt. Oh, well.

He should pass me by the end of the day. Damn. I just moved up from #22 to #21 a couple of days ago. Se la vie.

Hey, NewEgg has 1.4 tbirds for $109 plus shipping. All I would need is that, a fan and a motherboard, oh, yeah, and maybe a case, and .... Hummm. Where did I put that Fry's add?

flounder43
12-31-01, 02:11 PM
Sorry to hear about your problems, Nedclocker....but not THAT sorry...;)

One of my overclocks crashed again today, so I lost a unit and some time. I had to pull it back a little until I get a better HSF. The competition is kinda fun...

Happy folding!
