Ok, before anyone says it it illegal. I and my brother have researched this and the US/Russia import/export laws and checked in with the RMIS and have discovered that it is legal.

http://www.allofmp3.com sells music for about 10 cents a song (they charge per megabyte) and has a decent library of music though some more elusive songs they don't have. THey also have an online encoding feature that allows you to download music in whatever format and quality you prefer (MPEG-1 Layer 3 - MP3, Windows Media Audio - WMA, Ogg Vorbis - OGG, MusePack - MPC, MPEG-4 AAC, etc.).

I've read that it's legal/tolerated if the downloaded music isn't distributed.

There's some interesting legality to it to say the least!

Isn't this basicly the same thing as crApples iTunes store and the new napster, etc?

That's not anything new...the problem all along has been with the distribution of copyrighted music.

Except to get one song at iTunes you need 99 cents, on here you only need about 10 cents depending on quality. If you download low quality you can get songs for about a penny a piece.

I've been using allofmp3 for a few months now and I love it. The selection is pretty bad though (not horrible but any lessesr known bands you look for won't be on there), but as a service I couldn't imagine anything better.

I get 192kbs wma's that end up being about $1 for an entire album at near cd quality. Gotta love that. Also they're completely unprotected, so I can give them to my friends, burn cd's, transfer them to my car mp3 player, anything really.

I'm a student and I really can't afford to be spending $18 on every new cd that I want, or a buck on every song I hear on the radio and want to download. With allofmp3 I put $25 every now and then and get about 1.5gigs of music at my leisure, and don't have to worry about RIAA (as much). The story I heard is that American lawyers wanted Russian lawyers to investigate the site, but Russian authorities didn't cooperate. And since it's legal in Russian copyright laws, they have no reason to shut them down internally, so an American investigation would be required.

One more thing, be sure to get their download client, allofmp3 explorer. It's a must-have if you're going to use this service.

get it here:

The only thing I don't like by looking is that you have to pay in advance and they don't take paypal. I don't exactly want to give my CC info. to a Russian website and let them hold my payment.

from their FAQ's

I have a credit card, but am uneasy about using it online.

We have secure transaction processing using Assist.ru. If you need more information, please refer to their security information:

I thought of this too, but I figure my card's just as likely to get stolen from some sleasy online store in the US than this site, which seems very professional all around, even if it's barely legal.

I always use paypal debit cards for shady sites, they are free and you can always request new ones. They cannot charge for more than you have in your account, so I just load it with what I need a few days in advance.

*edit* I think they are only free for buisiness accounts, so not technically free

All of Mp3 is a solid site if you want to download any mainstream artists in just about any language, and its super cheap. I sometimes spemdd .50 cents on a whole cd(at 128 wma 9 for my mom) at normal quality but I live that they have ogg and flac whick i use on my rio karma. Dont worry about your credit card cause ive used mine at least 10 times without an issue, besides ive had people steal my credit cards before and not find out till my statement gets here and with one call and 10 min the credit card companys will refund every cent and track them down.

They had this on TechTv a long time ago. Seemed like an ok site, though I am yet to try it.

I've used it for a while. Great deal IMO. You can prieview the entire songs as low-res streams before you buy! The selection is slightly limited, but I found lots fo stuff I was looking for easily. They also have cool cross-references to turn you on to other simular styles (you can still listen before you buy!).

You pay for the bandwidth, so the higher quality files will cost more than 128kbps mp3's, but I think this is a good compromise. Even WAVE files would cost less than 99 cents a song IIRC. I downloaded like 11 full Zeppelin albums for like $15 or something (and at 192kbps). This was a quick and easy way to replace many many lost Albums (yes, those large 12" vinyl discs) and CD's that have wandered off over the years...

I had no problems paying by M/C, and the "prepay" is a cool idea IMO. If a song comes to mind, go find it, and D/L it quickly w/o having to pay everytime.

I don't think this website is properly handling paying royalties to the artists, but most of this crap has been bought by me once already. I still go to the CD shop to buy good new music (like Medeski, Martin & Wood, or other music that sparks my interest). If you really like the music, show the artists that you care, and buy from places that support paying appropriate royalties to the artists.
