I have att@home internet service. They told me that if I chose to buy my own modem that my service would be cheaper. I will be doing so. I would like to hear some suggestions on which model to get. The only perameter that att put on me is that the modem need be docsis compliant. I also want it to work with my nick rather than usb.

Thanks,

I have a Toshiba cable modem that is docsis. It hasn't given me any trouble in the year that I have hadit and it is very speedy.

The one my cable company supplied is a Motorola surf board, works really well. It works with NIC's and usb.

I would have to agree. The Motorola Surf board is a good performer. I own that as well. I opted for this even though it has only a 1 year warranty. The Wiz offers 3 types and the Surf board was recomended over the other two, which I believe had a two year warranty.

The nice option would be compatable with USB, but that would be shooting yourself in the foot. Using this as a USB modem would be a down grade. USB is slower than Ethernet.

I like my Ericsson PipeRider model HM200c. It even has USB support, so you don't have to use a NIC.

From what ive read/heard seen etc these fancy new usb/rj45 modems ussually suck, while our toshiba at work doesnt give me any problems it never seems to make the thruput my motorola does here at home...granted we could be on completely different subsections of the network but my work is in a sparsely populated area and we pay more for the more constant higher bandwidth business service...ive never cracked 200k there and i see over 300 here quite frequently
