argh i hate being behind in technology!! i bought my 1.4 about 2 months ago and now these stupid XP's come out!!
i guess ill have to start saving :(
There is no such thing as bleeding edge, because there's ALWAYS someone with a faster system.
It's the nature of the game. If you're not rich then it means being comfortable with "being behind the ball" for a couple months.
It doesn't mean we have to like it =)

Until there is a no brainer way to unlock the xp's, I'm sticking with the T-Birds.

Hey Creacher , your not alone by any means . Iam in the same postion as you with my 1.33 (only purchased a few months back) . I did however purchase a retail XP 1700+ ($159) yesterday , and Iam really beginning to wonder how SMART it was NOT TO WAIT abit . Seems the unlocking procedure for the XP's may turn out to be a big pain in the "ARS" ( this ,after reading "tips" from MANY other tech sites) !!! Right now , you may be BETTER off (and SMARTER) then the rest of us
 by waiting . ;)
that's why I bought myself a cheappy $27 duron... :D while i'm waiting for something that's good for me for quite sometime
I'm used to being behind the curve- way behind! I usually look for stuff thats about a year old because-
#1 its cheaper
#2 someone else already figured out all the tricks!
But I happen to have one of the XP's (1800+, woohoo!) and it rocks. I have been messing with the fsb, but I too am waiting a bit longer for the L1's: I've heard of 2 methods that have been used with success- soldering (scary!) and filling the crater.
However, since noone has done an in-depth post/article on either yet (that I've found) I'm waiting. Because I am scared! First time I've had "the newest, bestest" and I am NOT going to be the second to break it! lol
NOTE: if I had bought the chip, I wouldn't be getting it for another year!
Question:When is the best time to buy a new computer?
Answer: NEVER
You're going to wait forever if you try and get the best or "classic" setup.
It's the nature of the beast.
Just use your head, and buy the best quality components with the best overhead for up-gradability available at the time. My current setup should keep my happy for awhile. (minus V3 and v1.1 KT7a)
Overclocking is one way of stretching your $. Reading overclockers.com so you don't blow hundreds on some bastardized P4 system is another.
;)
You can pick up unlocked XPs here:

The answer could also be NOW. NOW is the best time to buy a new computer. Same reasoning.
Hey the processor that they are selling here http://www.theoverclockerzstore.com/OCZstore.cgi?user_action=detail&catalogno=OC-XP1533 is that the 1800 or is it below a 1800 overclocked up to an 1800(1.533)? Or is this a 1800 unlocked? If thats the case I will buy one right away so I dont risk messing up the L1's.
[/OC-XP1533
here it says the model XP-1533
Retail price: 199.99
[/XP OCed @ 1533Mhz ( 1800+ ) the unlocking process voids AMD's warranty
here it says that it's oc'ed to 1533
Their wording is misleading to say the least
I think it means its an unlocked 1800 chip, but I want to be 100% sure. This is a great price and it is unlocked, which is a process I would like to skip if possible. So cany anyone clear this up? I really want to know if thats an 1800 or if its OC'ed to an 1800.
The easyest way to unlock your XP is to buy some trace tape and use that. It is alot easyer

So, how would this work with trace tape?
Far as I heard so far you have to solder the chip, other ways have been less then succesful so far.

the overclockers store XP-1800 is NOT a real 1800, it's a lower chip O/Ced!
Thats what I thought, cheap ********. Why dont they just sell an 1800 unlocked, thats all I really want....If anyone finds an 1800 unlocked for sale please post it.
Ghaz: sorry, but if I find an unlocked 1800 I'm buying it!
If I find two I'll let you know though!:D :D

Heh, okay buddy. I just ordered the new Shuttle Ak31 revision 3, with that kickass new chipset, 768 crucial, Radeon 8500, killer SK-a heatsink for processor, killer 14 bay (biggest you can buy) antec case and all I need is the processor. I am going for the biggest and best of everything, I find this and I will be happy. SOMEONE POST IF YOU FIND AN UNLOCKED AMD XP 1800 PRETTY PLZ.

thanks for the feedback
i dont know, 1.56 right now is really good to me, and come christmas ill get a GF3 Ti-500, which will give me the performance i need for all my games, ill also shoot for another deskstar and do some striping.. which should give me a nice performance boost.
perhaps saving for a xp isnt the best solution.. if i did that, and actually installed it, id also want to upgrade my mobo, because its already somewhat out of date. (MSI has came out with a turbo LE, and a Turbo2 since ive bought mine). ill wait i think, until they release a 2.0 or so, and grab that come march/april. until then ill live with my tbird.
and why is it so important to overclock a 1.8ghz anyway, isnt 1.8 enough for any game you throw at it? (with a decent vid card of course). i think you'd really only see minor increases in benchmarks, until you reach 2.0+ and even then, with the memory and hdds being such bottlenecks.. but then again, this is the ocer's forums ;)
AMD's new "PR" (Performance Rating) system is working!:D
The XP 1800 runs at 1.53ghz........but it is claimed to be at least EQUIVALENT to a 1.8ghz from "other" cpu makers-read that as Intel!
And they do go quick, but my 1000@1400 is pretty quick too!

i would stick to mine T/B until atleast 2Ghz Xp come out -(not PR) or the thorobred- ( if it fitz to mine m/b), before dat i will just keep buying high and low noise level HSF, and try to make 1.6Ghz with a decent temp; such as 38-40 :D <--- dreaming
The chips on Unlocked Athlon XP 1800 (http://www.theoverclockerzstore.com/OCZstore.cgi?user_action=list&category=Overclocked%20CPU#) clearly seem to be unlocked Athlon 1800, not lower speed chips overclocked. For the price US$245, it seems to be genuine. The "XP OCed @ 1533Mhz ( 1800 )" for US$199 is clearly an overclocked Ship.
I dont see the confusion and will probably buy on, as I dont want to risk unlocking myself. Bear in mind though that factory unlocked XP's went out to some review sites early on. These would be the ones to get ! Its illegal for them to be sold though.

No no! look at the site closer.
There is this which is overclocked
XP OCed @1533 (1800) (http://www.theoverclockerzstore.com/OCZstore.cgi?user_action=detail&catalogno=OC-XP1533)
And this one, which the one peeps here are talking about which is just unlocked
Athlon XP 1800 + Unlocked (http://www.theoverclockerzstore.com/OCZstore.cgi?user_action=detail&catalogno=CPXP1533)
the L1 are a little bit different then the tbird L1s so I don't think the trace tape will work. I really need to buy a chip so I can test it out!

Athlon XP 1800 + Unlocked (http://www.theoverclockerzstore.com/OCZstore.cgi?user_action=detail&catalogno=CPXP1533) "...the unlocking process voids AMD's warranty, we carry our own limited warranty on these CPU's."
This implies that they've unlocked it by their own methods. That means that it would be the same as just unlocking it by yourself. Raised trace tape is being made already, so it will be easier to unlock XP's.
