Registering Domain Names

I plan on creating a personal website like many other people and am going to register a domain name for it. My question is if you go to a certain website to do that i.e. register.com do you have to use them as a host or can you do that anywhere once you buy the name? Any suggestions for good registering sites?

at www.dyndns.org you can register a hostname for free .. like http://blabla.dyndns.org ... there are several optional end´s to your domain name .. mine is http://whine.ath.cx
