Hey Guys! I am getting a l33t system, I need some help in the ram department. right now I have mushkin pc3500 2x 512mb they do about 235 fsb with tight 2-2-3-11 timings on my nforce2 dfi board.

My new board is dfi sli nforce4, athlon x2 3800+, and xfx 7800gtx, running on a seasonic s12 600w. As you can see, this is awesome setup, just need the best ram I can get for this setup. I am looking at the ocz, which should I get? Should I go 4 x 512? Or 2 x 1gb? Shoot me some links and some knowledge. You guys are so awesome!!!

I was looking at these

What is the difference between the 1 gig sticks or 4 512? (besides timings)

i believe that using 2x1GB allows tighter timings than 4x512MB. but i don't know specifics on super high end stuff, i'm more of a budget person :-/

with 4x512mb you have to run 2T... 2T is a bandwidth timing thing. But if you go with 2x1gb you can run 1T which allows alot more bandwidth. More bandwidth=Faster.

but there exactly a lot of good 1GB sticks, the best sticks have 2-3-2-8 timings which use infineon chips i believe. OCZ Plantinum, and Mushkin both have some out.

So its a toss up 1T, lower HTT/FSB or 2TB and higher FSB/HTT.

look at the upper-level OCZ/Mushkin ones. Patriot also has some that go 2-3-2-5.

OCZ doesn't list any 1gb sticks in their Platinum range. I don't think they've been able to reach satisfactory timings with them. Perhaps you meant the Performance range, which clocks at 3-3-3-8?

1 gig sticks are going to use 1T but looser timings. Most are rated at 3-3-3 or higher. 4x512 will need 2T but may take use tighter timings. If you are going to OC, the Crucial Ballistix PC4000 1 gig sticks or the Ballistix Tracer 1 gig sticks are the way to go. However, if you don't plan on OCing it, get cheaper stuff like PQI.

I just tested some OCZ 3200 plat 1gb stix 2-3-2-5, the best overclock I could get was 3-4-4-8@ 227fsb @2.8 volts@1t timing... I am sending them back. I will wait for 1gb stix to get better for overclocking :bang head

I think Patriots 2x1GB sticks are on sale right now for $199.99. So if you don't plan on overclocking then they'd be a good, cheap alternative.

last night for a few hours the crucial ballistix were in stock on newegg.com and I think they were miss marked at $325 for two sticks unmatched. I immediately bought a pair for the new system I'm building which is also l33t :attn: I was posting on this thread here at the time:

http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=395335&page=13&pp=30

later on i saw people at extreme systems posting about the same sticks here:

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=71754&page=1

Anyways, I'm writing this cuz the sticks are still mismarked and they say they'll be back in stock on the 22nd so if you are looking for 2gb of mem for bf2, you should deffinately grab these up. Keep watching them too cuz they randomly came into stock when I got them.

I'm almost positive these are miss priced because they were $235 a piece right before they went to $162. Hopefully the retard in charge or pricing doesn't catch his mistake before everyone who knows anything gets these. I might just buy as many as I can and resell them :santa:

wait, they were miss-marked at $100 OVER the normal cost and you are buying as many as possible?

What motherboard are you getting? may I suggest Mushkin redline or OCZ VX gold, x2 512 sticks in dual channel cant get wrong. but you need some active cooling. That is IF you want high voltage DBZ ram. Also, Corsair twinx 1024-4000XL

Hmmm... 400 dollars for 2 gigs of ram. Would these ballistix sticks go well with my new x2/dfi setup? I want this system to be TOP-NOTCH. Will ddr500 with loose timings pair well with my new processor?

The ballistix are the best solution if you need 2gb. They'll be the fastest out there period. They will probably overclock anywhere from 270 to 300mhz. And if you get them from newegg they're $325 for two sticks.

Yes, I see that. However, i dont think these are miss marked because thru crucial directly you can pick them up for 399. And seeing how NewEgg participates in price gouging nowadays, i am not surprised that they initially had them up for sale ABOVE what the manufacturer was selling them at.

You are probably right, $325 is still a chunk of change and newegg's probably satisfied making that much becuase they can actually sell quantity and their customers don't buy from crucial directly. I think it's a good deal though cuz the next best stuff, ocz, is $360 and it is rated at same speeds and timings but is less likely to clock as high.
