Props to Nemeth from hardwareOC for emailing me about this. Check out this little gadget that Gigabyte is releasing. That's right, you can use DDR2 memory modules in your DDR1 slot. HKEPCE has got the scoop on it.

Cant wait to see how this thing performs

I knew that sooner or latter someone was going to come up with something like this.

That's interesting... Are there any perfomance figures somewhere? I can't help but think running this would be at a major performance loss for overclocking.

from X-bit Labs

The converter may be required for price-conscious customers, who already have DDR memory, but want to switch to a new platform that would support PCI Express bus and LGA775 processors. The reason why Gigabyte decided not to install four DDR2 memory slots is unclear, as installing two types of slots may harder than putting four similar slots onto the board. Furthermore, four DDR2 slots would provide better expandability for the future.

According to performance measurements by HKEPC, Gigabyte GA-PT880Pro performs slightly better with DDR2 667MHz memory compared to the DDR 400MHz. Still, the difference in speed is negligible. The web-site also notes that when four DDR memory modules are installed, computer systems performs faster than the same system with a pair of memory sticks.

It is unclear when Gigabyte GA-PT880Pro reaches retail and how much will it cost.

That is nice, how about a DDR to DDR2 converter?

I don't think that is possible, mate :)

The essential features would be a larger page size, different tRef for small and big page sizes and some kind of on chip circutiry for adjustable impedance matching, i.e good termination. These coupled with changes in access regisers would make it very difficult to do a DDR--> DDR2 morph.

Anyone see resemblance to the SDRAM to RD-RAM converters that were out a long time ago?

I'm using ddr memory and not exactly hurting at this time.

I am guessing you would also need to step up the 1.8V DDR2 voltage to 2.5V+, necessitating a power supply section that further precludes the possiblity of such an adaptor.

Well if this module can make 2.5 out of 1.8, the reversed should be possible too, wouldn't it?

All you need to reduce voltage is resistance, you need a power supply to increase it.

anyone that has an XP120 anywhere near the memory slots is SOL for sure, they would never fit

True!

Also this may spark some ideas for AGP to PCI-E adapter which would make lots of people happy, but it would be hard to increase bandwith of the AGP.
