Is it possible to have a receiver with 2 speakers produce a full range of quality sound without spending too much? Let's say $200, maybe $300 total. Is a sub really needed?

Which receiver and speakers would be good choices for this setup?

My thread might be of help to you.

Speakers Under $150. But I'm probably gonna end up spending $300 on Speakers + Sub + Receiver.

Yes, there are plenty of setups that produce a full range of sound. I love HiFi, I have a two channel AMP 100watt PerChannel AX596 Yamaha. WIth Kef C30's. But you wont find them at your local Computer shop lol. If you want a good audio set up I would sugest going to a HiFi shop

If I wanted a system with a receiver, only 2 speakers (at least 100w each), no sub, what receiver and speakers can I get for 200 or 300 beans total?

For a full range of sound, is it better to get bookshelfs or floor standings?

This would be used for music and movies, I don't need surround since I'm not a big action fan. The goal is quality sound at a good price using a minimalistic setup.

Would the Polk R15s in lilxvietxboi's thread and this receiver TEAC AG-790 (http://www.epinions.com/pr-Teac_AG-790_2_Stereo_Channel_Home_Audio_Receiver/display_~full_specs) suffice?

I'd highly recomend you got a sub. It can make a huge difference.
