I don't know if this has been posted before but here is a site that lets you install Windows Updates trough Firefox.

Nice.

I wonder how long this will last though...since it looks like it gets passed the genuine advantage tool...

The only use I would have for this would be so I could get rid of IE, but I don't think I can trust that it will be around for as long as I will need Windows Updates.

Certainly a good find, and hopefully it will stay up and allow users of alternative browsers to update without IE.

I think I would stick with IE for windows update for reliability reasons. I would hate to start updating windows sytems files and then lock up due to a plugin issue. But if anyone tries it, report back to us.

You can bypass the tool in IE too, there is an option to disable the plugin. Windows Update works just fine with it disabled, but just gives a warning that it is disabled. Prety pathetic attempt at security.

If I was stuck and couldn't get any updates any other way...this would be great.

I've got total legit stuff and don't mind using IE7 so much.

I will pass this link along though, thanks. Looks interesting and I'm rather curious if M$ will have this shut down somehow.

FTLOG!!! HOW???
Right before you select custom or express, past this code into your address bar. javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')
I can't personally test it because my copies are totally legit, but I've been told it works.

BTW, I did try it for giggles on a legit box and it went through.

Just click tools: manage add-ons, show: add-ons that have been used by IE, then click windows genuine advantage tool and click disable. Close IE and go update your heart away

Found some info: thanks all!!

I tried these two together, just in case, and it works!!

1. Follow these instructions in IE:
Tools
Manage Add-Ons...
In either 'Add-ons currently loaded in Internet Explorer' or 'Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer'
Locate and select "Windows Genuine Advantage"
Then select the 'Disable' radio button
OK

2. When you get to:
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
Where you have to choose between 'Express' and 'Custom' buttons:
Before pressing the desired button, paste: javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all') in the address bar and press enter.
( I don't think I pressed enter, I think I just put that in the address bar and clicked 'Express')

uhhh, is there an echo?

I already stated that above.

And the second part is completley useless...you don't need it.

It's good to know both. In case you don't remember the script. Err...I guess.

i just did a windows reinstall and will need to run some updates... and get some firefox... so guess i will try it out... cuz that would be really sweet if i could eliminate the internet explorer reliance.

the only reason i hold on to it is because the convenience it holds for plugins.. (unrelated)...

mmmm firefox updating my windows... maybe microsoft hasn't caught on yet...

Hello

Try this,Go into ie and tools, programs and manage addons and disable Windows Genuine Advantage. That should take care off your problem.

Note to modderator if my comment is out of line delete it.

Hating MS and spelling it M$ etc etc is sooo 90's

Here in 2k we realize that businesses are out there to make money and that most likely you use Windows because it is easy for you to deal with.

If you want to hate on Microsoft try Linux or Mac OS till then realize the fact that you are most likely reading and/or typing this on a Windows machine and you are perpuating the very succesful machine that Microsoft has become.

Basically it is a case of put up or shutup.

Yes this is easy to disable most likely so they don't get sued by having a tracking system checking your keys and seeing how many people have that key and invading your privacy. That way if somewhere down the line the FBI gets some kind of rights to track that info then MS can say well anyone could have disable it you were just too dumb to hide from the cops or some such drivel.

For Windows stuff I trust MS. For non-windows stuff I don't look to MS to provide for me. I guess I will start trying to use Chevy parts in my Ford pickup since that makes as much sense as using Firefox to run vendor specific patches integrated with IE on a Windows machine.

I have no problem with companies making money. In fact, I'm about the most extremely capitalistic person you could meet. I don't even believe in taxation. As a libertarian, however, I have huge issues with M$'s desire to invade my privacy, control my computer, and sell me out to the highest bidder. I had no problems with M$ before TCPA, I was a happy paying M$ customer.

If you want to hate on Microsoft try Linux or Mac OS till then realize the fact that you are most likely reading and/or typing this on a Windows machine

Obviously, you didn't read my signature or look at my avatar. I'm typing this on a machine running gentoo linux, which I've found to be more fun, easier to use, and more stable than Windows.

Nope, I'm not. I've been boycotting M$ products since palladium was announced.

I don't trust M$ because I know that as soon as I let down my guard, they will take advantage of that and shove some DRM down my throat through some innocent looking patch. I have good reason not to trust them.

As a fellow gentoo user I can say that is just a flat out lie(I won't even accept that statement as an opinion). There is no way you can say gentoo is easier to use!!!!! Name more than 3 things that make gentoo easier, and those 3 things CAN'T have anything to do with portage. Now let me name 5 things that make it 10x harder.

1. ANY first time user needs a manual to install Gentoo
2. Xorg.conf (It might be nothing to you or me but, since when did you have to configure windows to let your mouse-wheel work let alone goto a forum for HELP to do it!!!!?!)
3. fstab (How often in windows do you have to write the fs type, the mountpoint and all that other garbage...YOU DONT)
4. USB Pen drives (I should rest my case here)
5. EVERYTHING has to be done by hand, nothing is given to you working. ANYTHING and EVERYTHING USB is the biggest example of that! And thats the greatest thing about USB (when was the last time you plugged somthing USB in and it FULLY worked without ANY problems)

As for stability, one word: placebo (In the same manner people say windows is unstable)

I'll grant you gentoo is harder to install initially, but after that, it's easier to use. I can install stuff much more easily than in windows. You mention "tell me why gentoo is easier, and you can't use portage". Well, portage IS why gentoo is easier to use. Also a lot of other things. I can easily access any pc in my house and run stuff as if I were on it from any other PC. I can sit on my living room couch using my laptop and running applications on 5 different computers at once transparently. I can easily distribute compilation tasks over my network transparently. Scripts allow me to automate things that would be difficult or impossible in windows and integrate seamlessly with the OS. The shell allows me to do filesystem tasks far faster with all of the built in utilities like sed, awk, etc.

I recently got a new sound card, and windows couldn't figure out how to install it, but gentoo just worked out of the box. I was able to make it work in windows after hunting down drivers on the web, but that wasn't even necessary in gentoo.

As for USB pen drives, I have no idea, I don't own one.
