Well, I don't have dsl or cable, nor do I use mandrake..
however, the first place I would try would be the
Linux Documentation Project (http://www.linuxdoc.org)

As long as you are connected your cable modem directly to your computer through a nic card and not connecting it to anything else prior to that it is simple. Run the internet configuration tool that is on the desktop, it will ask how you want to connect to the internet you tell it via install network card and Viola, up and connected and on the net you should be! It's really quite simple or if you connect via a Router you need to specify the gateway and address of your router. If you need help let me know and I will be happy to do what I can do to help you out.

what you want to is to use dhcp. How to set it in RedHat I can't say for sure, but that'd be the way.

You can go into the Mandrak Control Center and there should be an option that shows networking or internet. You might see internet and connection sharing below that. When you select that it should show some information about DCHP, IP address, etc. Don't make any changes just close that box and you will see DrakNet appear and try to connect and detect your settings. That might take a few seconds to do. Once that is done you should be set.

Dunno if this is true in your 'hood, but my cable ISP assigned me static IP's. You might call 'em up and ask if DHCP OR a static IP is what you have. Then Primary and Secondary DNS's.
