Have a Toshiba latop that supports pc 3200. The machine now has 512 mb in dual channel(2/ 256 sticks) Pc 2100 installed in it. The pc2100 operates with a 3:2 divider at 2.5 3 3 6 timings. I have been looking to upgrade to 1gb, 2 sticks of 512 of the Ocz pc3200 with 2.5 4 4 8 timings (Model #: OCZ400512VSO). Would I notice much of a difference with the different timings? Cosair offers some PC 3200 in the XMS line with 2.5 3 3 6 timings which is identical to the timings I now run with the PC 2100, but the cost is twice as much, 104 a stick vs 52 a stick. What is best option?

Thanks
Andy

Lappy is a Toshiba P25 with a P IV HT @ 2.4 ghz, 800mhz FSB. No options in BIOS to change timings. People have run the PC 3200 in them and it will recognize the ram at 3200 speeds and change the divider accordingly.

I am not really familiar with the Intel cpu's, but from what I understand is that even though you have an 800 FSB cpu it it really rated for pc3200.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Intels are quad pumped, meaning......
800/4=200MHz or DDR400/pc3200.

I would go with the cheaper PC3200. The timings wont make a great deal of difference, at least not a double-the-price-difference. :D

Just on a side note, just in case you don't know - normal PC memory will not fit in a laptop. You need to get the SODIMMs (Small Outline DIMM) not normal 184 pin DIMMs.

Correct, my main concern was I wanted to switch out the 2 256 sticks of pc 2100 which the laptop came with for 2 512 sticks of pc 3200. My concern was the timings of the ram. The pc 2100 that is currently in the rig is 2.5-3-3-6 and the OZC pc 3200 that I want to use has timings of 2.5-4-4-8, just did not know if it would present a problem. Corsair in their XMS line for laptops makes 512 sticks of pc 3200 with 2.5-3-3-6 timings but it is twice the cost of the OCZ and that is kind of hard to justify. Many of the pc 3200 so dimms listed on newegg & zipzoomfly are listed as cas 2.5 but when visiting the manufactures sites to research them I find alot of them turn out to be cas 3 and they do not list the full timings.

Yes, understand need to get so dimm's

Thanks much

I don't think it should be a problem. By default the board should read the timings off the SPD and adjust the timings appropriately.

Can sit in a cafe in Edinburgh with a cup of Starbucks coffee and program Java on your Uni lunch break with your Desktop on your lap? :D

Gots 3, the lappy lets me play at work :santa: :santa:

Went ahead and ordered the OCZ PC 3200 so dimms. 2 / 512's 2.5-4-4-8, was like 51 a stick. I like the XMS but is just to expensive at 104 a stick. Funny thing is Toshiba never made it known that the Intel chipset in the lappy would run with PC 3200 at the correct speed but it does as some folks found out by experimenting. Also runs in dual channel. Thanks for the help folks
