Sadly the makers of what I consider to be the best free software firewall have been bought by Symantec .

What do you think that means? Is the freeware version of Sygate firewall going to be eliminated? Even if it does, it's definitely not the end of the world, because Kerio and a couple of others have a free firewall that's good.
Also, Sygate Personal Firewall 5.5.2710 and possibly any version later than 5.5.2525 are a POS anyway, because it always crashes when it's supposed to load!!! :bang head
That's a pity. I've been using sygate pro firewall for a couple years. Wonder what Symantec will do with the product, as they have their own desktop firewalls.

thefly ............ Well hopefully they will make a new firewall that uses the best of both the Symantec and Sygate products .
RJARRRPCGP ............... I'm not sure what problems you are talking about with Sygate's recent firewalls , I haven't had any problems and have found them to in my opinion to be superior to the other free or shareware firewalls on the market .I have also found them to be better than the commercial ones bundled with Norton Internet Security for example . The other thing is that they are always loads of forum topics around the net where people have problems with Zone Alarm and Kerio , while I normally see very few issues with Sygate's products . And then of course there are other free firewalls which have been shown to fail .

I tested Sygate Personal Firewall 5.5 build 2525 and it's good overall. With Sygate Personal Firewall 5.5 build 2710, a different story, it always crashed!!!
When it's supposed to load, everytime, "smc.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows". :bang head

I have been using the 5.6 Build 2808 version in W2000 Pro Environment perfectly O.K without any single crash and perfectly stable in my PC! I love it!! :)
