**PLEASE READ SO YOU ARE ON THE RIGHT PAGE WITH THIS **

Well kind and fellow supporters of "Screaming Deltas", there has been major plan changes and this project has been flipped on its back.

After a frustrating night I had with the project I messed the case up a tad and miscalculated how a few things were going to be set up. In doing so I decided "...forget this case, its my project and ill do whatever I want". After searching on newegg with a fellow member for a bit in search of a new case, I didnt realize my new case/project was right in front of me.

My desk called to me and said "Be origional....". So....I decided, I shall use my desk as my new case. This project is now going to take even longer with school right around the corner and not having a desk is def. going to cripple me so, I will be working on this mod mostly on the weekends and breaks I do get.

Here are the CAD's of what I have planned except there will only be one PSU:
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a236/Son1990/SD%20New/DeskModWire.jpg
more CADs on second page.

Here are some pictures of my desk as of today:

As you can see im running caseless and wires are a mess! I'am happy to announce tho that my SLI system will be up and running again when I get my RMA back from Evga and that I just got my new Mushkin Redline XP4000's with black PCBs and New Heatspreaders.

The next post is reserved for Concept drawlings and sketches, maybe a CAD model if I can get someone to help.

I didnt exactly rush with the old case, more like Unsatisfied with no matter what i was going to do.

Shellshock, you of course arent suppose to know what im gonna do. You will understand a bit more (I hope) when the 3D Renderings are up and posted.

Today, in preperation for this project, I stoped by Home Depot to pick up some 4-40 and 6-32 hex screws, along with some more lexan/acrylic and a 4 1/2 inch hole saw for this project. I have always liked the look of these, they always struck me as clean and uniform compared to the Flat head and Phillips head screws.

Im still straddling the fence on some of the ideas for this project but I have cleaned off the first part of my desk for this mod, the computer section (right side) that i deamed: "Section: Zero" which is then broken down to 3 sectors. The other side is deamed: "Section: Alpha" which is then broken down into 2 sectors. Naming the diffrent sections is making this project alot more organized.

In anticipation to my final design choices, I have tapped off Section:Zero and have moved my caseless computer to the third sector of section zero. Yes it may sounds stupid with all these names but if the shoe fits wear it and its working great for me right now.

Still waiting on the 3D Renderings but what I was positive about was that I wanted a window above the motherboard with 2 exhaust fans.

I origionnaly was gonna use .223 Lexan when my mom accedentley cracked the sheet while we were cutting so, I have decided to go with two sheets of .093 Lexan.

The .093 sheets marked and ready to cut:
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a236/Son1990/SD%20New/DSCN2875_500x375.jpg

Size comparison of window with 2ft:
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a236/Son1990/SD%20New/DSCN2878_500x375.jpg

How and where the window will be placed:
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a236/Son1990/SD%20New/DSCN2879_500x375.jpg

I still have alot of sanding to do on the windows.

School starts next week on thursday. Freshman year! with oreintation on wednesday. So this means I must get on my normal sleeping patter so no more late night modding . I will cut the window hole tomorrow or sometime this week.

My order from TAP plastics should arrive tomorrow, finnaly, and I can get moving along faster with this project.

It looks like you have a good start on things! Too bad your other case project didn't work out, I was really interested to see how it was all going to go together!
Either way, I Think this "desk mod" will probebly be even more unique and I'm looking forward to following your progress.
Good luck with your freshman year. I'm a 5th year senior (graduating this year) so I did the whole freshman orientation thing.
Keep up the good work!

Thank you. Suprisingly Im not even a bit worried about freshman year. The senior who gave me my tour was gorgeous *day dreams and smiles* Urg....sorry off topic, but yea im excited.

The aim of this project Blake is uniquness. Someone told me when I said I was goign to scrap the case and go with my desk "Im smiling. Im smiling because everyone is modding a case, except EC who is modding a closet, and you...you are modding a desk, its brilliant" <----Something along the lines of that. I hope I dont dissapoint

Yes....thats right! Today is the 31st! and I have recived my order from TAP Plastics! now I can start fabricating some of the special things I have in store for you all.

From TAP Plastics I bough:
2 Small Hypo Applicators
1 Polyproplene Funnel
1 IPS Weld-On 3 cement (1pt)

Im currentley testing out how this IPS works for it is my first time using it and have 2 peices bonding togeather right now as a test. It says it should dry within 15 minutes and starts hardining once released onto arcyrlic. It also states that it continues to dry over a few weeks !?!?!?! The bottle is also made very wierd so it is difficult to pour into the syringes. As always a picture.

I actually discussed this with flamerail via AIM a few hours ago and I said that a part of the mod will involve me ripping up the carpet so I would be able to bolt the desk to the ground...........

:p :santa: If I planned to have it hoover, I would add fans to my chair so as to be able to stay up with my desk....hmmm...might have to get a longer extension cord.

NOTE: Im not worried about the noise too much beacause I blast my music over the fans and compared to the rock coming out of my two creAtive speakers, deltas sound like <enter a funny similie here>

As I wait on the molding for the window and for the Design pictures to be put up, I decided to start a little bit of the actual modding. Once I get pictures of the case idea, layout, etc. up...I will keep all of you posted with a "what is left to do" list in each post.

I decided to mod my Linksys Wireless Adapter. I personnaly hate wireless but untill I re-wire the whole house secretley over a few days, im stuck with it. I started by taking off the top, and ripping out the PCB and Antenna:
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a236/Son1990/Screaming%20Deltas/DSCN2657_500x375.jpg
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a236/Son1990/Screaming%20Deltas/DSCN2631_500x375.jpg
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a236/Son1990/Screaming%20Deltas/DSCN2638_500x375.jpg

In the last picture the antenna is still in its plastic blue shell but isnt anymore.

Son1990
09-01-05, 07:06 PM
I then proceded to cut, shape and sand the arcrylic for my wireless adapters new home/box. I measured, measured....and re-sanded untill satisfied. I turned my dremel upside down so the wheel was parrallel with the ground and used it as a mini bench grinder :p. Here are the four parts that will make up the box. I still have yet to cut out slot for the USB to Firewire port.(Note: Holes have allready been drilled)

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a236/Son1990/SD%20New/DSCN2913_500x375.jpg

After I was very satisfied in how those truned out, I took them to my workshop and pulled out a syringe of IPS. I used a pair of gardeners scissors to prop one peice up onto the other. Then Applied IPS on joints. First pic you can see overall idea of process, second picture you can see the pointes that have been IPSed.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a236/Son1990/SD%20New/DSCN2914_500x375.jpg

It takes around 4-5 minutes to set then around 24 hours to dry.

This weekend I will be spending up in New York City with my dad and then on sunday I have a practice all day (paintball). I will probobly have another update when I recive the CAD's, which could be this weekend, or when I decide to start to cut the window and thus begins the dissasembly of my desk

The Wireless adapter box is almost done. I got this finished right as I had to board the train to NYC:

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a236/Son1990/SD%20New/DSCN2928_500x375.jpg

As you can see I used the allen key screws. Sorry for th somewhat blurry pics...I was in a hurry. I used a nut as a spacer so the Firewire port solder connections wouldnt touch the Acrylic and then it was secured with another nut and blue locktite.

Im EXTREAMLY happy how this turned out you have no idea lol. I still however have to make the side panels.I hope you all enjoy my progress thus far.

Good Questions.

The IPS (Acrylic adhesive stuff) is working very well. It takes time to learn how to apply it correctly to the right spots. I bought the syringes and that has def. helped with the application of the IPS. The great thing about the IPS is that it is a solvent so it melts the two peices togeather so it is water tight if need be and dosent look like any glue was applied.

The cutting of the acrylic is done with a simple ruler (;)), and dremel with a reinforced cutting disk and flex shaft. I use the dremel because i can menuver it easier for fine cuts and with the small peices iv been woking with its been working flawlessly. For the bigger, .223, as well as window I used a jigsaw for I can obtain a straigher more professional cut.

gvblake22

Nice, that IPS stuff sounds like the way to go!
Did you experience any "melting" of the acrylic when you were cutting it?

I assume you are referring to the "melting" as the "re-bonding" of the two pecies so, no. The sides currled up and melted onto each individual peice forming a little crust that can be easily broken off with a little amount for force from one finger.

The IPS is def the ONLY (IMO) way to go when dealing with acrylic. There is IPS 3 and IPS 4 IIRC. 3 sets in 5 minutes and drys in 24 hours, and 4 sets in 45-60 minutes and dries in 24-72 hours. For my/our applications I would go with 3 which can be easily purchased at TAP plastics. If you get a poly funnel and syringes is a must!

Well after a day of little work, I FINISHED the wireless adapter box.
I sanded the insides with 1,200 grit sandpaper to spread the light of the LEDs within the box and give it a nice glow affect which lights up the whole box at night.

Its hard to see from the picture, but the whole box does glow.

Im currentley still waiting on the CAD's(Unkown), my 6800GT (Friday), and a bunch of goddies from our friends over at Frozen CPU(Within the Next two days). I will not be doing much modding tomorrow except to my sisters new computer. All her parts should arrive tomorrow and everything should be built and modded before bed time :)

+Buy more screws and nuts

The window came out very clean and only took me a few minutes.

looks good.

one suggestion i have, lookin at those massive delta's and their many many spinning blades... maybe you could spray or hand paint (wichever your better at) and paint like blood splatters on the deltas and the plexi glass.... it sounds alittle grusome but i think it'll give it a cool look and maybe you can find some small stickers where the fingers are getting cut-off and theres a big circle crossing it out, as sorta a warning and the splatter could be from someone that didnt listen/look.

goin along with this idea and the command center project on the other post(s) i may actually build my own desk here soon with everything i need/want in a desk, sinse i cannot find one that suits my tastes....have to see what next pay-day and home depot brings about.

but keep up the good work, looks great, and to me, your project is probably the most unique system/desk/idea ive EVER seen, next to the command center project :santa:

good-job.

one suggestion i have, lookin at those massive delta's and their many many spinning blades... maybe you could spray or hand paint (wichever your better at) and paint like blood splatters on the deltas and the plexi glass.... it sounds alittle grusome but i think it'll give it a cool look and maybe you can find some small stickers where the fingers are getting cut-off and theres a big circle crossing it out, as sorta a warning and the splatter could be from someone that didnt listen/look.

goin along with this idea and the command center project on the other post(s) i may actually build my own desk here soon with everything i need/want in a desk, sinse i cannot find one that suits my tastes....have to see what next pay-day and home depot brings about.

but keep up the good work, looks great, and to me, your project is probably the most unique system/desk/idea ive EVER seen, next to the command center project :santa:

good-job.

Ok, well...I have to go to school in a little bit so Ill give you a small update from my sisters newly built (by yours truley) rig.

I got my order from frozencpu yesterday, the molding, fan filters, fan grills, and LEDs. I put the molding around the window and will put some for the fan holes. Second picture is of how the fans will be mounted. Those are two VHEs acting as exhaust. Then in the following pictures you can see a general Idea of how the motherboard will be mounted and in the corner the PSU is mounted by 10/36 Hex key screws.

AWESOM!!! Great work with that top window. It looks much better/more effective elevated up like that with the fans underneath. How do you plan to cover the sides of that window that are open?

I also have one of those square wire mesh fan filters on my 120mm intake and they work really well, I'm very suprised at the ammount of dust they really do capture!

High School is the bomb lol. Sorry, just had to let that out. Ehem.

Well today I worked on the PSU cable hole and finished it after a bit of drilling and sanding with my trusty hand file. I still need to get the ATX cable down there, but in order to do that I must remove the molex first. It came out just as I imagined it would, like an angeled pipe from or in a factory.

Things left to do for PSU:
Take off and fit the ATX wires through hole
Re-Sleeve
Re-molex
Duct

My camera has also been actin up.

So far so good!
I still think you should consider mounting all your hardware on acrylic "mounting plates" kinda like what you did with your wireless adapter. Would look very neat.
For the PSU you could make an L shaped piece (apoxy two pieces together) and have it mount to the short side of the L where you would normally screw in the PSU to a case and then have the long side of the L go underneath the PSU.

flamerail
09-10-05, 05:57 PM
If you pull the atx power cords hard left u could make the psu go long endwise.
pull the other cables out and bend the atx like this and push it thought then reinsert the rest.

Could you explain that in more detail? Im still looking into the possibility of "Acrylic Mounting Plates".

I do hope you are kidding. Go trash some other Delta like a TFB1212GHE at least you can buy these without to much trouble. Killing this Delta would be like killing a bald eagle. Except these fans are even more rare. You have one of only 12 known units in the entire U.S.

What's with the odd shape cut out of the middle of the mobo tray?

I needed to have room for cables to come up under the board along with supporting the weight of the heatsink, so the little tab that comes in holds the processor mounting plate firm and tight. The cutting of this was so simple, Im very happy with my new scrollsaw.

yeah, my parents finally let up. I was re-wiring my computer once, and my dad started getting hyped up, "YOU'RE GOING TO RUIN YOUR COMPUTER!"

hell, once when I was cutting out my fan grills with my uncles dremel (that was hard enough to convince them), and I was putting my rig back together, I pulled out the CPU from the mobo (after it was in the box, caseless). I wend to my dad, and showed him, and he started flipping out, "THATS A VERY SENSITIVE PIECE OF HARDWARE PUT IT BACK IT MIGHT HAVE DIED!!".

You are sorley mistaken my friend. The picture decives you. There are only 3-4 wires in that picture and they all run along the top of the desk then swoop down when they need to connect to the mobo. As to not interfear with the airflow from the fron intakes, They cant be placed any lower. All other wires are neatly hidden. :p

Wow, well after getting back from a long day of paintball, I spent 3 hours making the bracket for the GFB1212VHW that will be intake/cooling for my SLI cards. Here is what hard work, and a ruler can get you.

Totally agree there. I have the unfortunate luck of being in Geometry (and honors I might add) and it SUCKS. Proofs are someones biggest nightmare. D*** theorems ugh....... Anyways keep up the excellent work and I like your lighting choices.

I always hated algebra, I couldn't understand why I had to do all those problems. I mean if they had a realistic problem that required fixing with the use of algebra then I probably would have liked it more. Only started to enjoy math once I got to the calculus (maybe trigonometry) because of the 'real world' problems involved. And now when I go back university next semester it's off to Diff Eqns.... yay.

Anyway, it's still looking good. Like the sound of the light up desk, and also think the color choice will work well.

I vote for UV :)

And simple/basic algebra is very useful. At least I find it useful. But the higher end stuff just gets a little out of hand. I end up feeling like I move numbers and letters around just because it is possible, not because it actually achieves some sort of useful end result, lol

And nice work on that optical drive!

HOLY CRAP! This turned out VERY well!
I also really like that huge @$$ duct with equally huge @$$ delta at the end of it! It fits in really well with the title of the project. This has to be one of the most unique (if not the most) uniqe mods I've seen to date! I really like how well the whole thing fits in there under that shelf! And I also especially like the whole fact that you can see all the components at different angles. It puts some nice emphasis on the SLI setup through the top winodw; I know if I was running two 6800 GT's I would want to be showing them off!! I think you pulled it off very nicely.
The lights are indeed pretty bright, but I would have liked to have seen some yellow or red or orange or something, instead of blue. But again, I like how you did the duct, very creative. Creativity is one of the things that is easy to cut out from a case mod project as you are completing it because it just becomes too much to think about sometimes. But I'm glad you hung in there and got it done and got it done right.

One Big Applause For You Son!!!!

As for CFM's there are around 720, not as much as I origionnaly intended but still a good amount. Yeah, I think he just added up all the ratings, but that isn't right because decibles are on a logarithmic scale or something so you can't just add them up like that. The actual measured deceble rating of all those fans would not be equal to the individual ratings simply added together.

4GHZ_or_bust
10-28-05, 12:50 PM
That makes calculating the dBa of combined fans hard. At 230, your ears would be bleeding and your hair would be on fire. Heck, you'd be getting noise violation summons from the neighboring state!

When adding decibels, two equal values added come out as 3 decibels higher.

10+10=13

100+100=103

and so on. So say you have 4 fans at 28 dB? That's 34 dB total. (28+28=31, 28+28=31, 31+31=34) Just random numbers :P
