Well, I just finished pencil volt-modding the card and it ran fine, then I went to reattach the cooling and I grabbed the board too hard and voila! this little resistor snapped right off. Anyone know if it is safe to put back on? (maybe solder or some other conductant) is it worth trying to fix or is it done for? Thanks.

unless you broke the resistor, just solder it back on. If its broke then no power will go thru and it wont work, if it allows power thru then its not broken and it will work. It's kind of a win win situation as in if it doesnt work your not going to fry anything lol. Wait for a second opinion but that is my 2 cents.

k thanks icedragn...yea the resistor looks a little chipped on the bottom where a tiny fragment stuck to the board, but i guess it cant hurt to try..

You should be fine just soldering it back on. Just try not to heat up that section of the board for too long. High temps can damage the surrounding circuitry if left exposed for extended periods of time (say 20 seconds)
A little bit of flux on those joints and the solder should conform perfectly again.

thats what i hope firefox! alright im off to the hardware store ill post results when i finish trying to save it. =)
That is the reason I always handle my components by the edges.
Many TV repair shops offer this type of service, if you dont trust yourself or have the skill.
Otherwise, GL!
as the other person said, remember to use a low-wattage soldering iron...

if you need any help, I do surface mount soldering. Try to use a multimeter and check the ohm from side to side. If it does not read or reads inf then the res. is dead. no need to solder a dead one. Some specialty electronic shops can order those as well.

Talk to Viperjon, he is the man to speak with about this.

I did the same thing to my old 9800 pro... at least one surface mount resistor and something else from the back of the card broke off...funny thing is the card still worked and o/c'd perfectly fine...scared the crap out of me when it happened though. worked fine till I accidently dropped a hdd on it...that finally took it out, got a keychain out of it so not a total loss...good luck in getting that back on...I tried but only succeded in breaking it somehow.
I recently broke not one, but four SMR's off my X800XT PE. Then I went ahead and lost all four of them. Needless to say, couldn't fix it on my own. You should probably be fine soldering that single one back on, but don't try to power the card on without it. If you can't repair it, might want to consider sending it to ViperJohn. It's what I ended up doing, and he sent it back literally better than new. First-class work for sure, pricey, but still a fraction of the cost of a new card.
