windows media player locks up everything

this is the only thing that has been plaguing my system as of late. I have an older video card which might be part of the problem.

when i have several things open, wmp locks up the whole system if i try to play movies on it. i'm on windows 2k.

p3 1000e cdo @1240 default voltage on a abit bx6 rev 2 board with 1 gig of crucial pc133 cas 2 ram. my vid card is a diamond viper 550 16 meg.

any suggestions?

are there any other decent free movie players for windows?

Ive had problems like that before with 98 and 2k... Most of the time I end up formatting (mostly due to other reasons) but after the re-install and upgrading it works.. I think it might be a bad player install... But first I would check for the newest codecs and all that....

You shold try "The Playa" is is certified for all video formats except for .mov and quicktime stuff. Is great for DIVX

I had this same problem with the 7.0 version. Everytime I opened Internet Explorer it locked the machine up. I went to 7.1 when it came out and haven't had a problem since.
