Hello, i'm going to buy an ati silencer 2 for my 9600xt (poor thing runs at 80C load, but on a hell of an OC  ). I would have to remove the HS on the memory on the back of the card-

http://www.rojakpot.com/(muijid45ocbl2145tqbrxmyv)/review/Radeon_9600XT/rearview_back_small.jpg

My HS's are just like those...

What would be the best method to remove them? those were installed from factory, so I guess they probably didn't use CA ;) ...

I love this card and would never want to kill it! (it's like a pet to me hehe)

Any advice would be appreciated!

thanks,

Dan

Put it in a ziplock bag. Put in freezer overnight with the freezer at its lowest setting. Take it out and quickly before the board heats up twist the heatsinks off.

Cool. Is the thermal compound included with these silencers good, or should I get quality stuff? I'm pretty much shooting for the lowest temp. possible.

I strongly recomend NOT taking them off. You are very likely to destroy the card. A lot of people have ripped their ram right off doing what you are planning to do, including myself.

yeah i agree with the person above me, unless your willing to take the risk of killing your card, don't do it....

I would try it. I have. The freezer makes the epoxy so brittle that it takes very little force for it to come off. I have done it many times to cores and memory that has had it. Never once did anything ever happen. The only time I ever tried taking off a hs that was epoxied without using the freezer method, I couldn't even get it off with my fingers. That was on a core, not memory, so there was no damage, but the next morning when I took it out of the freezer the heatsink was "eager" to come off.

That is assuming it even uses epoxy. I have only once encountered a hs epoxied to a video card from a manufacturer. All but one time I have removed an epoxied hs it was from a user. Most companies use just some tape or foamy thing that is pretty sticky. For those I use a razor blade to push out the tape stuff or cut through it.

I killed my 9600XT trying to remove memory sinks I had on with Arctic Alumina Epoxy which is much stronger then the thermal tape holding your sinks on. I was going to install a Silencer 2 :-/

However I recenlty had success at removing sinks of off PLL and mosfets from a P5WD2 motherboard. I froze the board over night and then firmly twisted off the memory sinks with pliers.

The sinks you have look like there are 2 memory chips to one sink. IMO those are good HS and I wouldn't risk taking them off. Get the Zalman VF700, just as good if not better then Silencer 2 and you can just leave the current memory sinks on and sell the ones that come with the VF700.

Just make sure you TWIST. Bad things will happen if you don't.

Regarding the Zalman VF700, how does it compare to the ati silencer 2? From the looks of it, I think it might lack cooling the memory chips, which of course the ati. sil. really cools well.

or you can put a credit card or debit w.e inbetween the heatsinks and the pcb, slip a flat head screw driver inbetween and twist and it'll pop off :)

That doesn't sound like it would prevent the memory from flying off the pcb. Can you explain a little more?

not really haha, ive used that method it works :) it dosent pull the mem off cause the preasure isnt even on the whole chip, just on the edge, so i pops off :)

The Zalman VF700 cools as good if not better then Silencer 2. It comes with 8 memory sinks, which in your case you could just sell for a few bucks.. Here (http://www.sharkacorp.com/) are both versions of the VF700 with the new Blue LED fan for very cheap. I'm sure the versions withoutthe LED are cheaper. I'm ordering the Cu version with the blue LED.

Which one is better, the alu-copper version, or the all copper version?
But does it cool the RAM chips well?

All copper versions are always better because copper has better thremal dissapation properties than aluminium, theres a thread about it in the cooling section I believe.

The cooler covers most of the card so yes it will cool the RAM as well to a certain degree but the heatsinks are more than sufficient for RAM as it does not get as the as the core. The fan on the zalman will blow away all the hot air from around the card which is all you really need. Theres a reason why few people use water cooling on thier graphics RAM chips and its that they simply don't need more cooling than a heatsink and a good thermal adheasive(sp?)

Are you sure? these RAM chips are 2.5 ns Hynix and they do get quite hot. I'll look up some reviews to see the performance of both.

Untill recently ram chips didn't need cooling at all. You don't need to be too worried about it the zalman is an excellent VGA cooler. Yo won't have any regrets in buying it (unless it gets in that way of another socket that you wanted to use)

Ok. I have 1 PCI slot free under the card, the other ones all all used up. Is that enough to make space for it? I have a modem that i don't use of course, since we have ADSL we might be able to trash it.

Dan

Hey check the sig

I have the zalman 700

I can oc 9800pro to 425/375 stable no lockups or artifacts default speed is 380/340 the zalman blows air on the entire card the arctic cooler does not do that, but it does discharge the hot air out the empty pci slot wich is good.

Id get the z700 It works

Dan

I have only 1 free pci slot its under the agp port the zalman only takes up 1 pci slots space

belive me the z700 is more expensive but if you want copper cooling it rocks & very easy to install

I couldn't have said it better. Wow @ people who have ripped their memory off the PCB.
