I have seen people refer to PC P&C being able to do a custom fan (quieter) in the Turbo 510 SLI model.

Does anyone know the details as far as which fan they offer, price, leadtime etc?

(Yes I would call myself but they are closed this time of day)

Well if you get the latter revision then you don't need to wory about loud fan since they only used Delta ones on their first models.

I believe the current ones use Deltas and the ones made last year used a Nidec that was louder... but I have seen reference to a custom fan you can specify. Sanyo?

They use those 3 blade delta's in their current models.

How loud are they, what's the DBA on them?

i dont know but darn the psu is loud...

It shouldt be loud. It uses an EFB delta no?

There are two EFB's, a low speed one and a high speed one:

Low Speed: 57.60 CFM @ 2800 RPM, 36.0 dBA

High Speed: 79.81 CFM @ 4000 RPM, 46.0 dBA

I'm not sure which of the two they use. You can check them out at SideWinder: http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/92mmfans.html

i dont think is either one of them, i might be wrong....i can tell you though, its loud, at thg they recorded 72 dB(A) in 12 centimeter gaps, whatever that means lol, i can tell you that my mcp 650 pump is dead silent compare to it....

I know for sure it's a 3 blade delta, becuase I saw a picture of a guy modding a brand new PCP&C 510 SLI to change the fan and took out a 3 blade delta fan. I'll try to find it.

Cool, is there a link to more pics and mod information from this?

I just called them. At first I must have spoken with one of their tech people because when I asked about prices he transferred to sales. Anyway, he said there is no custom fan option.

Later when I spoke to the salesperson, she said they do some kind of different resistor for a small fee if you are looking for something to run quieter.

So I guess if you want to do a custom fan you're on your own.

The resistor is a good idea.

It's a high speed Delta Triblade 80x25. The Nidec that they used to use was apparently quieter.

Look at the bottom of this page.

If you are truely concerned about how lud your poer supply is you should consider something like a Seasonic S12 600 instead.

So If I get the 510W SLI from newegg..it would give the revision with the quiter fan right?

woodchuck69

Yeah newegg would have the latest revision and I believe what makes them quieter than before isn't the fan, but the control circuit is set up so it doesn't go as hard until it really heats up.

Right now you want to order from PC P&C direct though, they are doing 10% off. http://www.pcpowercooling.com/20th/

I'd have to agree. My 510 Deluxe (which has the 3 blade delta) is quite quiet on start-up. But after a bit of use it gets quite loud.

BTW do PC P&C PSU's use a PWM way of controlling fan speed? Because the fan has a very annoying tick, like some of the fans i have on my T-Balancer.

I dont know what everyone is sayin lol. I must have gotten a perfect PSU cause I cant hear my PC Power and Cooling at all and Iv had it for a good 4 weeks.

The fan ticking doesn't sound good, you don't want it one day to fail and fry everything. Call them up and see if you can get it replaced.

It doesn't sound like a bearing is going, Its a constant tick that gets faster as the fan increases in speed, just like some fan controllers do.

If you go over to silentpcreview you can find tons of posts about ball bearing fans "ticking" - it just seems to be the nature of certain ones, but I haven't seen anyone else report the Delta doing it.

Wow these people are tough to talk to. I called to find out more about the resistor mod (of course my order was picked up early by Fedex but they said they could re-route it to someone else and mod me a different one). First the sales girl trys to talk me out of it and says the Antec P180 bottom chamber with its own 120mm freakin wind tunnel turbine blowing on it isn't going to cool it as well as a fan in the upper chamber of the case?? OK

Then when I said I'd like to go ahead and do it she puts me on hold no more than 5 seconds and comes right back and says OH I just talked to Bob and he said that mod isn't available anymore because too many units were overheating. I said wow that is disappointing considering I've spoken to a couple people that have had it done with no ill results at all. Nice 5 second conversation with Bob. Apparently this "mod" hasn't been availble for a "couple months."

So then I asked to be transferred over to tech support and stayed on hold just long enough for her to inform James about what was going on. I asked him about the resistor mod that controls that fan speed and was met with the friendly "I don't know what you're talking about" and then he goes on to say it was a capacitor mod but now that is built into the PC board of the PSU it's a non-issue.

So it's not available because of warranty issues yet it's supposedly built into the PS now.... Nice and helpful they are.

I just bought one on 10/25/05 (510 SLI) and I'm listening to it with both my side doors off. The CPU fan drowns it out. I have to turn down the rpms on my cpu fan before I can hear the PSU. It's definitely not as quiet as my laptop, but compared to what I'm used to I think it's pretty quiet.
I noticed where they changed to fan to one the produces more cfm and is noisier and also guys talking about a number of the 510s burning up. I wonder if the more powerful (and noisier) fan is an anwer to the burning up problem.

haha, your fan must have died then. It's a loud power supply. I don't think the fan is every below 30dB but I could be wrong. I remember having the nidec version, which was quieter, but it didn't move nearly as much air.

and whoever mentioned the seasonic s12, you have made the best point. if you want a quiet 510, you should sell it and get an s12. I think i'm going to try one for my next computer.

the lastes models use the EFB0812EH, 52CFM, 5000rpm, 43dB. The speed and noise is determined by how hot the power supply is. Also, because the fan is pressed up so tight against the heatsink and other internal components, there is a lot of extra turbulence (=noise).

rip it open, babyyy. (http://img490.imageshack.us/img490/219/10018382eb.jpg) just got mine from newegg like a week ago. that tri blade is loud as crap. and im deffinitely not stingy about dB (observe the ffb1212ehe). i stuck a softer fan in there, and ghetto rigged it until i have time to drill some holes, and buy a "better" 8cm fan. mine was an efb0812eh, apparently (http://www.pcbulb.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=29&products_id=371) 42dB, 50cfm. although it's much more prominent than my ffb at 7V. it's a distinct, and quite annoying wiirrrrrrrrrr. i can handle white noise, it's the clashing pitches that get me.

as for "being able to do a custom fan", hell yeah. there's a good amount of space where the fan goes. not nearly as close a call as some of my older psu's.

Before I see i try swapping fans, i am going to put the thermal probe on the HS in the PSU, then swap to a Zalman 80mm fan, and see how the temp is still. If its not too hot, I'll keep the fan in there.

Sure thats a 3-blade delta? Normally the 3-blade deltas have the golden thing in the middle.

It might be a nidec beta V
