Dear All,
I am new here, and was wondering if you could help me with a quic problem. I have a 5 Port Hub and Want To Connet My Cable Modem To 2 Computers Without Having To Purchase A Router. Can Anyone Help Me, And Let Me Know How To Do This, Or Send A Link To Somewhere That Explains It.
THANKS A MILLION

Use ICS or something simmilar. You will need to install two Nic's in one machine this will be the gatway, or if you have an old 486 or something better you can get freesco or coyote linux and make a router out of that box the use your hub to connect the two computers, or you can get your ISP to give you another IP.

you can call your cable provider "roadrunner" for me and request a nother IP

I only had to pay $5 more dollars a month

I also have a 5port hub and 2 computers and all is working fine for me=]

if you get a nother ip you will thin have 2 ips one for each computer

you restart the medem "unplug replug" and restart both your computers at the same time

thin after the computers restart type winipcfg in the run menu and refresh and renew with both computers

this is what I have to do everytime my ip change=[

just get a router much easyer and cheaper in the long run

I have a 5 port SWITCH (Its better then a Hub but not a Router, so its between the two). Your hub should have a 6 ethernet cable ports, 1 of them is for you cable modem and the other 5 are for your computers (read the manual to figure out which one does which). Before you do all that, install a ethernet card on each computer, with the TCP/IP protocol installed in your network setting under Control Panel. Then you do all the plugins into your hub from you computer. Then you should get a program that does the networking for you. There are lots of programs that can do that for you, i use sygate cuz i use win 98. But if you get winxp or win me ( i think win 2000 too) they will do the networking for you. Which will setup the internet connection and sharing of files (if you want). Try to find a program that can do it for you. This way of networking is called Single NIC. Which uses only one ethernet card on each comp. There is also another way which the server comp uses 2 NIC cards and the client uses only one NIC card, but dont worry about this way, stick with the Single NIC.

BTW, if you want to share files, i think you need the IPX protocal installed too...

If you have anymore questions...plz feel free to ask...

Can't help you with the hub, but I've got a Netgear RT314 (Gateway Router) and love it. For the novice, just plug it in and start your computer. Ready to go. For the advanced, you can telnet to it and set all the access parameters on it.

It also acts as a firewall, blocking that whole pesky Code Red and similar worms from even reaching your computers. In the whole year I've been using it, I haven't had one single port scan get through to my computer. Get ZoneAlarm also, and you are protected up the wazoo.

Kinda pricy (about $100), but worth the peace of mind.

tried logging in to any secured sights using that rt 314.. BET NOT!!
lol.. it doesn't support IPSEC. maybe not the biggest thing on earth but it is if u must log into a secured sight.. The linksys BEFSR 41 does support ipsec but only one connection at a time. Just something to think about.. I have used/configured both products in my wireless internet division and are both very user friendly. I think that netgear has a slight tendency to lock up once in a while and require a reboot however. has anyone else seen/heard about this?

one more thing. use the dhcp function on both of the above. this makes the config on your machine a little easier.. No u don't have to use ipx either.. use IP it's a much better protocol and easier to troubleshoot. Just do winipcfg to make sure that u get a ip from the dhcp enabled box then ping back and forth this ensures that you can see from one machine to the other. Then make sure that the workgroups on both machines are the same and whalla.. Networking made simple.. Well almost. :p
