How do I do it? (get my speed back) Several months ago someone posted asking us to go to a specific site and run the speed tests there to determine our upload and download speeds. At the time My down was 1567 and my up was 317. Lately my machine has been as sluggish as... well as something that is very sluggish indeed. I went back and tested my machine and got 190 down and 102 up!!! I though the time might have made a difference, different amounts of people online at different times of day. To test that I went to the site with my backup machine and tested. My results were 1587 down and 194 up. My main machine is super slow. How do I get my speed back. I don't doubt that I've got all kinds of gunk and kudd bogging down my system but I don't want to do a complete system reinstall. What's the best way to get my internet setup clean, lean and mean again without a full reinstall? My os is 98FE and I'm using internet explorer v5.5.

Go visit SpeedGuide.net (www.speedguide.net) and grab one of their registry patches for your OS.

Should help. You could've installed something that messed with you connection settings in the registry. Happens to me all the time.

Been there, done that. The only result is that now most of the time when I go on the net web page graphics don't display. Thanks for the suggestion though. Looks like I'm going to have to do a full re-install, just as soon as I get enough disks to burn what's on the drive now so I don't loose anything.

Do a defrag, and disable anything you don't need at startup, that might help.

Here's an example of what I have to look at on Overclockers.com after putting in those tweaks, it remains thusly after removing them. I blanked out specifics with red but the rest is how I see it now. Gonna try the defrag idea, already trimmed my startup.

This seems like a problem I had before I swapped NICs. At high FSB, pages would only partially load. Also had trouble with downloads freezing. I had a Kingston NIC but switched to a D-Link (530TX+). All works well so far.

It isn't a nic problem. My Duron and K6-@ use the same nic, I bought them at the same time, same place. And this problem is only bugging my system after I put those special tweaks I got from speedguide.net. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Sorry about that. I guess I mis-read the problem.

My first login after the reinstall, it is yet incomplete, must tweak for a few days and install improvements. No further suggestions required. Thanks though people. :)
