Hey, I'm having trouble figuring out what kinda ram my parents computer has. Yes, it's a newbie question, but there's two different results that I get. They have a HP Pavilion 774y (D7218K) Desktop. It current has one stick of 512MB, and I'm trying to see what it is so I can simply add another 512MB stick.

The HP support website states that it is PC2100: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...roduct=299528&lang=en&cc=us&docname=c00018887

The bios also states that it is PC2100.

But when I open CPU-Z, it shows that the ram's Maximum Bandwidth is PC2100 (133 Mhz), that's where the problem comes in, I thought PC2100s are at 266mhz.

When I look at the FSB on CPU-Z, it says it's at 133.3mhz, and the multiplier is 23x. So the clock speed is at 3.06ghz. But I always thought if it's at 133mhz, doesn't it mean that the ram is PC133?

The ram stick itself says PC2100 on the sticker, but doesn't say the frequency speed.

Also, how can I tell if it's 184 pin or 100 pin? I tried to put it in a PC3200 slot, but it doesn't fit too well.

So the main question is, is the computer PC2100 or PC133? Either follow the HP website or follow the CPUZ frequency speed. Any suggestions or help would greatly be appreciated.

Here is a screenie of what CPUZ says:

nononono.. 133mhz = DDR266 aka pc2100, its relatively simple but you just need to get used to it lol

edit: further explanation, lets say ddr400 (standard for ddr1) means one stick of ram runs at 200mhz (2x200=400 lol hence the dual data rate) and pc3200 is i believe the theoretical bandwith of the ram at that frequency but im not going to get into that because im not sure

Ohhh I get it, that's what the DDR meant...lol. I tend to not notice that it should be doubled, but I guessed it was PC2100, because the computer isn't that old to be using PC133, since that's usually used for laptops nowadays.

Thanks a lot for the help though, I'll be getting an extra stick of 512MB PC2100, but one last question, I saw around and some people say "I'm getting the 100 pin verison", is there a difference for the verison or number of pins I should be getting? I know it should be 184 pin, and that's what the HP website says, but just to be sure, since the PC2100 ram didn't fit into my PC3200 slot, so I'm not too sure if it's 184 pin or not.

PC133 the term used for 133MHz SDRAM, just like PC66 and PC100, but PC2100 is the term for 133MHz DDR (or DDR266).

The DDR rating of PC2100/PC2700/PC3200, etc is derived from the theoretical max bandwith, calculated as follows:

ram speed in MHz x 8 bits per byte x 2 (for DDR), then rounded, if needed:

133 x 8 x 2 = 2128, rounded to 2100

166 x 8 x 2 = 2656, rounded to 2700

200 x 8 x 2 = 3200

Reefa knows because he has every DDR ram ever made in pairs of two on a large Ark. If the rains come the ram will survive!...........LOL
(Hi Reefa, how have you been, buddy?)
