View Full Version : W2K Pro - ACPI, IRQs and 3d performance.
my system was sharing a few IRQs for several devices including the video card. i tried to fix that updating the ACPI driver to standard PC and actually it seemed to manage the IRQs better. the fact is that i lost a lot on 3d performance doing that now with the video card sharing an IRQ only with the NIC - it was sharing the same IRQ with three or four devices before. my 3dmark2000 score was 4100 before the update, now its 2955! shouldnt i expect an improvement after the update?? or w2k actually works better managing IRQs as that earlier way - with the driver ACPI?
is it possible the performance loss to be happening with other processes?
thanks for the attention,.
Win2K supports the PCI standard of sharing IRQs....Look in device manager and view devices by connection...Try and change an IRQ. You can not change IRQs with Win2K like you can in Win98. I have 7 items on one IRQ and I have 3 IRQs with nothing on them. I looked into this and found that you are better off to let the ACPI, PCI and Win2K look after things.

acpi in win2k usualy does a good job but if you are using older cards or one card doesn't like sharing then things get a little hairy.

I've noticed 2kPro has a lot of shared IRQ's. But they don't affet my system in any way, so I'm happy to leave them alone (for the time being....)
ACPI is from hell.
I always disable that garbage before installing and all my devices have their very own IRQ...all to themsleves :]

i thought just that too but in fact the loss on 3d performace was huge. do u disable it as i said i did?
I disable it in the BIOS before I ever even install the OS so it doesn't have a chance to initiate at all.
You say you have video performance decrease with it off? I've never seen it. My GF3 still pulls over 7100 3DMarks in 2001. Play all my games with every goodie it has turned on with more frames than I'll ever need.
well, i lost a lot unfortunately. i lost also the automatic shut down: when i want to turn off the machine i need to wait for the message that the system is ready to be switched off.
i dont know if we're talking about the same thing. i didnt "disable" it: i updated the ACPI driver to the standard PC one the way i readed on another thread which relates to the same IRQ problem i was getting.
there is no option for ACPI in my BIOS and i think the loss in 3d performance is due to the new IRQ management, what you think?
