What are the benefits (or not) of altering my timings? And is it as simple as going into BIOS and changing them, or is there anything else I need to do?

Lowering your timings would give you more memory to cpu bandwith.
Athlon's prefer lower timings over frequency, but as you are using intel you should get more performance of raising ram freq, and forget about timings, becouse intel loves higher freq's.
