I planned on doing the ultra-bright blue led mod to my MS optical mouse but was curious about a few things. For my case i set up a few ultra brights in there running off the 5v line, however i needed a resistor or else the led's would burn out after a few hundred hours. The question i pose is what kind of voltage is supplied to the mouse? Is it sufficient to power the ultra bright led's without a resistor or is it too much to necessitate a resistor? I know the red led currently in there uses much less power than the UB-blues, anyone have any exact figures on the MS opti mice?

I don't have an answer for you, however, you could most likely just break out the old Fluke Multimeter (doesn't everyone have one?) and put it on the wires or contact points after you take out the old red LED... put it on DC Volts on one of the lower scales, like up to 15 volts. Should get a pretty decent read off of that, I would think that you wouldn't have a problem burning them out from too much voltage, more likely there wouldn't be quite enough to get full brightness..

The voltage should be just right, as many others before you (myself included) have done this mod. If all else fails, you can just stick the old one back in.

I'm using a 3.7V LED in my blue modded, and that's what someone told me the MS mice use, too.

That sounds like a nice mod. What's the best place to get one of those LEDs?
