View Full Version : I love Win XP so far!
I love this operating system so far. It's pretty quick, in windows, comparable to win 98se anyway. Prog,s open faster, and internet speeds seem quicker. There's so many different things to play with as well. And stability is AWESOME so far. Even though it's only been a day or so. I've had no stability issues at all. With win 98 or ME I would have atleast one by now. I still gotta try some gaming with it yet. I don't really expect any increase in that. If anything maybe a slight decrease in performance. We'll see.
Just thought I'd throw my opinion out there.
you'll prolly see an impovement in the gaming arena. since XP is built around directx 8.0 so just download the newest drivers for your card and get at it. i've loved it so far.

I am personally not a fan of WinXP. The appearance looks as if it was created by a pre-school youngster, however it is stable, it is also somewhat rather bloated and requires seriously tweaking to make it reasonable imho. I do not like they way that 'Instant Massenger' is forced upon the user during install.
Overall a reasonabley stable OS but a somewhat over rated one imho and the appearence is a matter of taste.
I have not tried XP myself but I do have a pet peeve with Windows automaticly installing things like the online services in Win98 that install even when you uncheck the box..Seems instant messager is similar.
Yes the automatic install of the messenger is a pain at times. So far the only real problem I've had is I cannot get Max Payne to play. Tried a few others and they worked great. But Max Payne just crashes back to the desktop when ever I try to load it up. Any idea's?

You can change it to look like a traditional Win 9x operating system.

have you try to download the 1.02 patch yet? it suppose to fix the crash to desktop problem
Yes I did install the 1.02 patch and it did not help. I've got a later version of Win XP now. I'll try installing that version and see if it helps. I was using the 2485v. Now I'll try the 2600v. That may fix the problem.
We'll see.

I am aware of this however if you do not like the look I would consider that a better idea would be to buy a discounted Windows2000 and spend the savings on more ram to give your system performance

I like it... I installed it over top of a 98 installation that was starting to go south on me and I have not at all had bluescreens/stability problems (at least ones that aren't related to overclocking). I do agree that the default GUI is positively stupid, though. I changed mine to standard Win2K look almost immediately.
I think the major plus is game compatibility... most recent Win9X games will run on it. I tried to make Madden 2002 work on 2k and it wouldn't, works fine on XP though.

yeah I am a day old on XP and need to switch to old school view the new options are nice but not really that different other than MACifing everything.
like it but some things like tight security are a little annoying needed but annoying. I am starting to like it more and more....hmm could be a good thing now if the v5 drivers really work.

Well, if you're installing the corporate version on a home computer you've either got a really nice business or you're pirating a copy.
The corporate version doesn't require registering with Microsoft
More I play with XP the more I like it! lots of good features and finally unzip included in the OS. looks just like a MAC. I honestly think I could trick my friends!
isn't the release date of the pro final oct 25th?

That isn't entirely true... Retail versions of BOTH Windows XP Home or Windows XP Pro require Windows Product Activation (WPA). OEM versions of Windows XP (both versions) don't require activation, per se. However these versions have .WPA files that tie the software to the machine's BIOS. There is a version of Windows XP Pro called 'Select' that requires site licensing and doesn't require WPA (this is probably what you are talking about). It is reserved for large corporations with 1,000's of seats and comes hardcoded on the distribution disks to reflect the license owner (when you log in, it will say "Registered to Unisys Corporation...") and cannot be changed via registry or any other method (according to M$). If you ever need support and call in (or make your request via internet) with a 'Select' product code, you would immediately be referred back to Unisys' support desk. [I'm just using Unisys as an example for I am familiar with them. I would assume that it works the same for any other Select licensees.]

Most corporations will be using XP Pro and WPA will be required for each machine. As far as differences go, XP Pro adds multiprocessing support (handy if you own/are buying a Tyan MP board and have two Athlons lying around). Pro offers enhanced networking that allows a machine to log into multiple domains--great for mobile users. It also includes "Remote Assistance." This feature lets you invite someone to see and control your computer remotely. There are other benefits, but I consider these to be the major ones for you to consider.

I should be getting XP soon sense my moms school is give every teacher a copy and she a teacher:D
she said there giving here Office XP is that the same as Windows XP?
if so what version do you think they will give her? and would it be home or Pro version?

Interestingly, Office XP was released before Windows XP. Office XP does NOT require Windows XP to run. Now if we can just figure out where the Athlon XP fits in, I can be completely confused.

What evidence do you have that XP is more stable than 2000 as from my experiences it is no more stable or any less stable once that 2000 is patched, and the reason for this could possibly be that XP is closely related to 2000.
I do agree however that XP generally holds the users hand a little more. However I personally believe that ease is often confused with a lack of flexibility.

Thanks for clearing that up for me!
Well, I installed Win XP build v. 2600 and now Max Payne works great. Must have just been a bug in the earlier build.

I think I'm missing something here...
correct me if im wrong but xp launches oct. 25
*looks at watch*
How does one snag XP before it has launched?
Beta testing...
Win2k unstable..in my experience (spelling?) so far, before I even got the Service Pack 2, win2k was fine..still is..i personaly WILL NOT upgrade to Xp for reason being you can not buy one cd (no I do not pirate) and install on all ur home pc's like 2k or Me, I mean there would have to be another way for pirate protection..I have 2 pcs and to have to buy an XP cd per computer I do not like that idea..seems like M$ wants more mula than it needs...

I believe that xp is shipping with OEM machines now but I'm not really sure.
I have been using xp for a few months now. It can be downloaded from Microsoft for a $10 fee. The first release was rc1 and then rc2 was released about a month or so later. These are supposed to be the final two beta releases before the final version.
You can find more info here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/evaluation/trial/wpp/default.asp)
Edit * I just looked and it is no longer available for preview.
Edit2* Only the pro not the home version was available to preview.

I have upgraded my Win2k to XP to see the difference and theres not much to see..except the looks... and the task manager shows the networking info too... I wont hesitate to go back to win2k if XP fails to meet my expectation...
