So what exactly makes the AMD processors better than the P4's or vis versa? Afterall AMD is just copying Intels work isn't it?
I guess I should state now that this thread needs to be kept in a civilized manner, haha.
Probably will be moved to Debates if it goes like I think it will...

actually amd stopped that practice long ago.......if they still did copy off of intel their processorswouldnt brteak as much...just kidding....the amd athlon processors have an entire different architectures which have superior speed at the same mhz clock...(they do more things per mhz)....right now the chip of choice would be a 1.4ghz athlon(90$) because the only chip that competes with it on the intel side happens to cost 560$.....

To say that AMD is faster then the P4 is really an unfair statment for 1 verry important reason, the P4 hasnot and cannot reach it's real potential under win 98/me/2k, it was desighned for XP, I am with most when saying that AMD has a better chip right now due to price vs preformance,in current OS's, however most people haven't seen the full potential of the P4's yet, not real fair to judge and condem a chip tht is bottlenecked by the OS, for all we know the benches may the upper level of what 98/me can ever get regardless of the CPU used, 98/me will die soon after XP comes to play(and after someone figures how to get past that M$ BS, I fromat to often to call M$ every time and let them know) but the p4 aretecture isn't desighned for any OS out right now for us to make a real comparison.

Considering that XP is nothing more than a development of Windows2000 I would have thought that the improvements obtained by the Pentium 4 using this operating system would be minimal. The Pentium 4 requires software to be written specifically for it to perform well and I do not believe that Windows XP has been made with a preference for the Pentium 4.. All the benchmarks and reviews I have seen to date display that on everyday retail applications running on the Windows XP OS the AMD Athlon Thunderbird and Athlon XP out perform the solution offered by Intel at this time

I was under the impression thet win XP was the first 64 bit OS sr somthing like that, I do not know to much on how the OS works internaly, this is just what I heard, all other OS's are 32-bit and the P4 is the first true 64-bit CPU, again I don;t know the internal working's of either, so I could defenatly be wrong, ant one else know for sure to shed some lght on this subject.

the first 64bit cpu is the itanium(intel)......it also happens to cost 3000 dollars according to pricewatch....
AMD is not copying Intel if it was, then AMD wouldn't have beaten P4 in the benchmarks..
AMD out preform the Intel and the price range is a large difference....
The Thunderbird was beaten by P4 by not a whole lot and look at the price difference would you pay an extra 100's of dollars just for some better performances...
AMD is just a good chip for its price ..

Now I might be wrong here but isn't it so that win95/98/ME are 16bit OS cuz they're still (partially) based on DOS, and only NT, 2000 and XP are true 32 bit OS?!
No it doesnīt work that way.
Windows is not a interface that "translates" mouse clicks into DOS commands. Itīs more than that. It has a kernel, and it does feature system calls. Letīs put it in a simple way : the kernel canīt allow programs to access hardware directly, there would be many problems sharing resources and illegal operations.
For instance: Program A doesnīt know what Program B is doing and tries to access a system resource, the HD in this case. But Program B is allready using this resource, so when Program A tries to write to the disk it messes up what Program B is doing, and both programs (and the OS) come to crash. And you end up loosing your whole filesystem.
Of course this is only a pseudo-OS, meant for example.
So the kernel takes control of ALL the hardware, and provides system calls, a better way for programs to access hardware. System calls are requests a program does to the kernel to do a hardware operation. The kernel monitors operations and maintains the system running correctly by blocking simultaneous access to one resource, where errors could occur. Itīs a bit difficult to explain in few words, but the kernel is simply responsible for the execution of simultaneous programs trying to run hardware operations concurrently.
AMD are faster than Intel because they are better optimized, not for an OS(but itīs true, the OS can make a difference if itīs optimized for one specific CPU), but internally there are fewer delays and wait states and so on. There are differences, and AMDīs architecture ir totally different from Intelīs, the only similarity is that they use the same instruction set.
- Windowsīs Kernel is a 32-bit kernel, even tho some instructions are 16-bit, the majority of it is really 32-bit, and it can access hardware in 32-bit.
- Win2K is also 32-bit, as well as WinXP.
- It seems that WinXP will have a 64-bit version, tho Iīm not sure.
- Tunderbirds and PIVs are 32-bit CPUs. Itanium is the only Intel 64-bit CPU out there(if it has already been released, I donīt know). There are other 64-bit CPU out there, SPARC, DEC, CRAY and others.
Guys, if someone notices any mistake above, feel free to correct me.

WOW Dapple that was great, thank you for that explanation, verry impressive I think, well I strike my last comment in light of Dapple's post, again WOW thanks:D
