When trying to install win 2k it does everything right up to where it begins to install files. Then it will give me a message that a file has been copied incorrectly and that you can hit enter to try again, Esc to skip it of F3 to exit setup. The file will sometimes copy if I hit enter but not always. It does this to about one to two dozen files. While some files seem to come up most time others don't.
We have tried 4 win2k disks, 3 computers and 4 CD drives. Can anyone tell me how to fix this or how to make Win 2k work after the failed install. Depending on what files it can not copy it boots to avarying amount. Please help I have two computers at work that caan't be used!

Have you tried fdisk to remove the old partitions and then reformatt the HDD with the 2kpro disk. I dont know if this will help at all but its an idea.

i would guess that you are using copied w2k installation disks? that error usually goes with a bad disk image, but if not I would guess that the cdrom(s) are not reading, go out and get a good one for about $50 and just move it about your office systems to install with

Its your CD. Try to find a legit copy.

I had a pirated copy that did that, then I got my MSDN version and all was well.

I suspect a data reading error as well. I always create a folder on my drive c:\win2Kcd and copy the I386 folder to it. That way I can run my install directly off my HD which is way faster and as a side bonus I don't get prompted for my Win2K Cd all the time when I add something like another network protocal.

We have tried one burned disk and 4 legal copies on this. Would the copying of the CD to the hard disk be the same as for win98?
Also does anybody know any non-Windows programs that I could use to check the hard drive or the CD-ROM to see if they are working?

Boot your system with a boot disk and type the following -

copy d:\i386\*.* c:\win2kcd

This asumes that your CD is drive D: in your system. It will copy all your Win2K files needed to install Win2K. Once you have copied these files over change directories to the c:\win2Kcd folder and type winnt to start the setup.

if you have formatted the boot disks under other operating system than W2K its possible some file is corrupted in the disks. i made that and got an error.
before i begin to install w2k i started my W98se system and formatted the 4 disks using the "makeboot" file on the w2k CD. in the middle of the operation to install w2k i always got an error similar to yours. the solution was to make the boot disks under a w2k system - using the same CD (it was not a problem of my w2k cd).

We have copied to hard drive and tried to boot and have fdisked and formated from the cd-rom and it still didn't work. Have also tried booting by useing boot floppies made by win2k disk always the same problem has occored. Currently useing FAT32 format and cannot go to NTSF because it has to go on a network. Any more suggestions?

There is the possibilty that a hardware conflict is causing this. Although 2K is not as touchy as NT 4.0, certain hardware problems can cause an install to bugger up.

what you describe to me sounds like cd or cdr problems but i guess u could try to boot into a dos disk and run fdisk, chkdsk, scandisk, and format your mbr,(but saw above) also is your virus check enabled in your bios, i think a remote possibility that that could be your problem

I have the same problem in that when I installed (direct CD boot) the files comsetup.dll and driver.cab wouldn't copy not matter what. In W98, driver.cab copied to disk but I was forced to use my Win2K Server CD to get the dll. BUT in both my other two machines, all the files were copied directly. I think it may be the type of mobo/cdrom combo you are using but this problem seems to only affect older PC's (in my case anyway). Try to get a PC that can copy all the files and then maybe do a network install off it.

I had the exact same problem, as soon as it went to copy comsetup.dll it all went downhill rapidly.
No matter what I did it would not copy the file or any other files after it, IIRC it was at 74%.
In the end I re-installed 98SE and then upgraded to win2kpro.

If you have a 98se disc handy try putting that disk in when it tells you it cant find the file?.

Well two new pieces of infomation here. 1)It turns out that the computers needed Win2k reinstall after a power outage during a lightening storm.
and
2) The computers have been sent to a repair shop at $50 an hour(ouch!).
So I am no longer workiong on them. But as for the upgradeing from 98Se to win2k I think I will try that at home.

On one of the computers it turned out it was the RAM that was causeing the problem. It had a stick of 128 MB and one of 256MB. They took one stick out and it worked. I guess thats why we pay them the big bucks to fix our computers.
Still don't have the other one working.
