I recently got a Athlon 1Gig, after about 2 weeks i thought i wound check if it was unlocked, it wasn't. So i tried the pencil trick, it worked great, i got to overclock 200MHz faster. But then four days later (today), i was watching a DVD, it suddenly crashed, I reset my computer and found out that the cpu core speed was set back to default (7.5). Which means the pencil must of faded,
but i thought it was suppose to last for about 6 mouths?:(

not really could last for ever could last hours, its just depends on what type of pencil and lead and how hot the cpu gets, all sorts of stuff. Just get some connecting tape, or a condutive pen, and connec that way. or be ghetto like me and trace over the bridges again and once they work cover the L1's with a peice of clear tape. i has stayed on my friends for over a year unlocked still

I think it depends on what kind of lead you use. If you want more of a permanent method, I would recommend using the defogger paint. If not, you should erase the lines and start over.

I tried the pencil trick on my old locked 1.1Ghz. Worked fine for about 3 weeks, but then one morning I booted back at default settings. Didnt unlock it again after that because my core was getting chipped.

Locked processors are f***ing cr*p if you ask me. I can understand why AMD do it, but its FAR too hard to get the processor unlocked.

My new 1.4Ghz TB was unlocked default. Best processor I've ever bought in my life IMO. The overclock ratio is a bit weak mind.

My pencil has lasted almost a year w/o any problems at all.

Another reason to use a conductive pen. Graphite is used in making resistors. Enough said.

Conductive Ink Pen. Would you rely on pencil lead for such an important task?

Thanks for the info,
I think I’ll try the pencil trick one more time, if that doesn’t last for at least a week, I’ll buy a conductive pen.

yeah i used that trick cuz I was getting frustrated with the defogger and my caffine-induced shaky hands. Just put a piece of electrical tape over the L1s and it will last for a lot longer.

LOL element.

When I unlocked my 1.1Ghz processor, I used...

Really big light (100W)
Big Magnifying glass
6B Damn Sharp Pencil (For higher conductivity)

I tried HB, 2B and a 6B. Only the 6B worked. It was almost impossible to sharpen the pencil to a fine enough point though.

If I was to unlock the core again, I would use conductive paint.
