View Full Version : WinME ICS kills surfing
I've set up a simple network with 2 computers using 2 NICs and the crossover cable. I can browse the other HD and print from the remote comuter but can't surf. I've got DSL with an external modem. If I put ICS on the main machine (the one with DSL connection) I can't surf anymore.
Suggestions please.

I'm not an expert at networking, so please take this with a big grain of salt.
If the DSL modem you have isn't also a router, it's my understanding that you'll need to install two NIC's in one of your boxes, as well as a NIC in your other box to be able to use a CAT5 crossover cable to connect two boxes.
Or you can use a LAN router. In the end, a LAN router is a good investment!
Two NICs in your main machine with the modem connected to it. One NIC in your other machine, use a crossover cable to go from this NIC to the unused NIC in your main machine.
This layout will change if you want to use a hub/switch. For that you still want the same amount of NICs in each computer as stated above. Just omit the crossover and use a regular CAT5 cable between the computers and the hub/switch. Hope this helps!
You're right about the hub, but I was going inexpensive since I already had a NIC in each computer. The DSL modem connects via USB. And then the two NICs are hooked together via the crossover.
