Right, this is probable more simple than I realise. I will also probably be asking a really stupid question, but please, be gentle in your rebuke, and clear in your reasoning :p
I want to upgrade my hard drive - I am thinking of something like a western digital 250gb. Finances dictate I can't go too much further than that. Any pointers would be much appreciated, if I could get something as close to £50 as possible it would be great, though £60ish is the cheapest I've found.
It will be replacing my current 120gb drive which I had an idea for...
My dad recently purchased a domain through a special offer when we switched ISPs. They offer 250mb of hosting space for it, which is nice. I would like to maybe use the site as a secure (well, requires login) place for file storage. I will have this 120gb drive, and I also have an old p2 350 laying around on my bedroom floor at the moment. I was wondering if it were possible to use this as a host for the files I want to store.
Now, obviously I will need an OS, and whilst I have an old copy of windows 98 I think, it doesn't seem a great option. Firstly because of max drive sizes, and secondly as it's not that good. Being a cheapskate, a free OS would be nice (for nice, read essential) so a linux obviously would be required. This I assume would be hard to setup in the next 10 days (timescale for project), but hey, it would be a laugh trying!
As for the hardware for the old pc - is it even close to being able to fulfil my requirements? I know I will need to buy a network card for it, as it does not have one. Currently I am on a 2mb connection, with not great upload times - so I realise it would be slow, but I just want to try and set this up partially as a statement of geekiness - partially to learn. Also I want, one day, to be able to say "yeah, my site went down as my mum unplugged the pc to do the hoovering - the reason for the long downtime is that I am 200miles away and had to talk her through the startup process".
Anyway, I think those are all my questions, but I suspect that I have forgotten something obvious, and the first reply will be "the computer/connection can't handle it - don't bother".
