View Full Version : Is thermal tape strong enough to hold the Blue Orb?

I have a Blue Orb that I want to attach to my ABIT Siluro GF2 MX400. My video card doesn't have any holes for the mounting pins, so I have to use either double sided thermal tape or Arctic Silver epoxy.

My questions are:

1. If I use double sided thermal tape, is it strong enough to hold my Blue Orb in place?

2. If I use Arctic Silver epoxy, will I be able to remove my Blue Orb if it breaks down? Or will I practically lose the entire video card?

3. Which of the above is the better method for heat transfer?

4. Is there another option that I can look into?

Thanks!

artic silver is much better for thermal transfer but the tape should be strong enough......i would probably use normal artic silver with superglue on the corner....

Yes and No.

Yes it will be strong enough to hold, BUT...

Heatsinks work better under pressure. The highest PSI on the core w/o crushing it should result in lowest temps. Reason for this goes right down to the molecular level.

If you look at modern cpu's, eg Athlons you will see that a strong clip is needed for good temps. With my SK6, I had clip on back to front which meant half the PSI on the core. Temps soared to 80C. I corrected that pretty sharpish.

if you want go to RadioShack and get some thermal glue.
