View Full Version : Slowest folding box
Ok, I just loaded the 2.0 version on a P133 with 80 meg of ram. Any idea wether this thing will actually produce work fast enough to count?
BTW, I have to say I'm amazed at how fast W2k runs on this fossil. It's actually quite useable.

That is not so easy to tell. IOW I don't know. It has to be able to fold the protein in 4 days.
They are supposed to be using a benchmark now to determine the size of the protein that you receive in 2.0 so it may work. All I can suggest is - give it a try. If it works you got another folder :D
Well it looks like this box will take about 4 and a half days to crank something out. :( Are we sure about the 4 thing? If so I'll shut it down and see if I can get softfsb to run on it or overclock it somehow. If there's a decent chance theyll accept it past the four day limit, then I'll just let it go and try to overclock after it's don.
It's an IBM PC 350 with a Pentium 133. If anyone has any brillian ideas on how to squeeze a few more mhz from it, I'd be happy to hear em.

I don't think I can help with the OC since I wasn't really using PC's much(all Mac really- don't miss 7.1 all that much but OS8.5, different story ;) ) when that was built.
2.0 is a whole new game, but I haven't seen any mention of a new time limit from the FAH forum or Vijay. I can only assume that the limit still stands. You could let it finish and see if you get credit for it. The time limit has been very important to this project because the work we do tomorrow is built upon the work we did today, which is why they don't extend it too far. IIRC it took a bit of coaxing to get extended as far as they did.

I had to do some searching on the Net to find out what kind of motherboard my P166 had.
Then, I found some info on how to set the jumpers for P180s and P200s.
Set it for the 200 and voila, a P200 folding proteins.
If you can even just find the clock and / or frequency jumpers on the mobo, you can just play and try to figure out what changing the jumpers does and do it by trial and error.

nihili - this may help. look under System Board on the lower right hand side of the page: from the IBM support site (http://www-1.ibm.com/servlet/support/manager?rs=0&rt=0&org=psg&doc=JBAR-3TTPG3) , if your machine is a type 65x6 you may be able to get to 166. If it's a type 6577 or 6587 you may be able to get to 200. I've been able to boost a few of these older machines just by changing jumpers. One of my Compaq 133s ran happily at 200 for several years with no changes other than the jumper setting. Hope this helps. :p
