which prime test are you running? blend, small fft, large fft? If you aren't running blend, then you are using a minimal amount of memory. that would explain it. be careful with memory errors. you can corrupt you disk, slow in your case but in can happen.
 
basically... say you have some stuff in memory. like some windows files. if those files get changed and get written to the disk and they are filled with errors, um yeah corruption. I may be saying that wrong, so someone correct me. But that should be the jist of it.
 
Your system will read files from the hard drive at boot (and while the OS is running) and store them temporarily in memory. Applications, for instance, will load into memory while they are running for faster response times. If your memory is causing errors, some of the data in memory will become corrupted, and the corrupted data will be written back to the hard drive. In extreme cases, this could cause your OS to be completely useless.
