I didnt know where this ort to go, but anyway, here goes!

I have a old pc working as a file server, and the last few months its been playing up.
- The first time i noticed anything, it was stone dead one day, and wouldnt boot, fan spun, hdd/pwr light on, but nothink else :bang head
- So next day i did the whole testing varous parts, they all worked, then stuck it together, worked 100%
- Then it did it again a week later, so a little fed up i left it alone a while, and next day it just booted fine, and its been like that since.

It works 100% fine for about a week, then totalltyout of the blue, it dieds stone dead, just like somone plud the plug, and if you try and fire it upgain you just get fans and lights, nothing else! Then leave it unpluged for 24h and its right as rain again!

What PSU? It might be dieing. Try swapping it with a known good spare (if you have one) for a couple weeks and see if the problem disappears.

The PSU is a 'PowerMAN' (250w i think) can with a 2001 time pc.
- Maybe thats its! Thanks.

Also, Just been inspecting the mobo, and two of the caps by the side of the cpu are bulged, so maybe that the cause, and mybe thats caused my the PSU.
- The mobo is a MSI K7T Pro1 by the way (infact, thats in my sig)

Thanks, Daniel

Your motherboard has bad caps!!!

For more information about the bad cap issue, go to the following web site:

Yep, bad caps will do that. Also, a generic 250w PSU is probably less than I'd recommend. A Sparkle 250-300W PSU can be had for ~$30 and would be much better than your current one.

Well, i'll try and dig out replement pc and see if that cures it.
- As for the caps, i know all about it :( (ex 8rda+ owner) but unless i replace them myself the pc's a write off thb, although i might sell it for parts, or try and get a 2nd hand mobo, or replace them, or just stuff it and get a NAS drive instead!
